Show 20 Vernal Express Wednesday, October 23, 1996 Marathon continued from page 18 made you feel welcome." Also participating in the marathon were Basin residents Harry Barber, Sharik Peck, Chad Walton and Jared Riser. As great as an accomplishment as it is to complete a marathon all 26.2 miles of it Walton went one better when he earned the recognition recogni-tion as the best finishing time for first-time runners. Considering there were 800 in the category, that was no small feat. Walton's time of 2:44 placed him 36th overall, sixth in his age group of 25-30 behind Tim Jones' overall winning time of 2:18. When asked if he ever hit "the wall" a term used to describe a point in the marathon when runners feel like they have absolutely reached the end of their rope Walton's answer was "no, but the pounding on the joints, especially es-pecially lower body was tremen- 5 . xkmt dous and very painful." Riser, 18, also running in his first marathon, placed ninth in his age group with a time of 3:30. Barber, running in his second marathon finished fin-ished with a time of 3:50 while Peck, as running in his second marathon recorded a time of 3:53. Cochran, running in her sixth marathon ended up with a time of 3:55. Because of the rigors and demands de-mands such an event places on the human body, none of the local runners run-ners will be running in such an event soon. Sports physiologists estimate es-timate it takes the human body three months to fully recover from such a demanding task which is probably just fine with those who participated. participat-ed. When asked if they would run the event again, to a person each answered an-swered a definite yes! The team, consisting of Utah soft-ball soft-ball players has a bit of a local touch to it with Vernal residents Dave King and Porter Phillips playing play-ing for the club. Phillips also played for a 60 and older team. King has played with the team for the past five years including last year's championship effort. The team's competition included clubs from around the U. S. competing in the 50-55 age group. In 1992, this team won a bronze medal. In '93 a silver and in 1994 the team finished in fourth place. 1995 and '96 have both been literal golden years for the players.
