In the United States alone, an esti mated 200 million gallons of used motor oil are improperly disposed aged, the United States could save thousands of barrels of oil each day. Used oil that is properly handled can be re-refined into lubricants, processed into fuel oils and used as raw materials for the refining and petrochemical industries. It takes 42 Gallons of new crude or oy oeing dumped on the ground, oil to make 2.5 quarts of high quali tossed in the trash and ending up in ty motor oil, compared to just 1 gal landfills and poured down storm sewers and drains. Just one gallon of used oil has the potential to contaminate up to one million gallons of drinking water enough to supply drinking water to 50 people for one year. Additionally, used oil that ends up in the country's rivers, lakes and streams can threaten aquatic life. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 60 percent of Americans change their own motor oil. Of these do-it-yourselfers, it is estimated that only 10 percent properly dispose of used motor oil. If all the used oil that is improperly improper-ly disposed of were properly man- Ion of used oil. Two gallons of used oil could provide enough electricity to cook 48 meals in the microwave oven or provide enough power to run the average household for 24 hours. If all the used motor oil in the nation could be collected and burned for energy, it would produce enough energy to meet the needs of almost 900,000 households each year. Dispose of your used oil properly by taking it to the used oil collection collec-tion center nearest you. If you have any questions, call your local county coun-ty health department or the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste at 1-800-458-0145 or the Uintah Basin Public Health Department at 781-5473. The road is located north of Jensen a mile west of Highway 149 on the Brush Creek Road. The section sec-tion of road goes to a subdivision of eight families. A group of residents requested help from Uintah County last week because of the poor condition con-dition of the bridge on the road that goes across Brush Creek. The bridge is so rundown that the residents resi-dents of the subdivision are cut off from emergency service and the delivery de-livery of propane to heat their homes. "This is just something that has to be done," said Lewis Vincent about the improvements to the bridge. Commissioner Lorin Merrell said he was not opposed to upgrading the bridge, but he wanted to wait to determine if having the county do work is the most beneficial. "I am hesitant to put in a 12-foot culvert, because I don't believe it would be large enough," said Commissioner Merrell. Residents in the subdivision had secured the signatures needed to give the county a 66-foot right of way past the bridge. The bridge and road have been privately owned. Hamblin said the remodel is necessary nec-essary to maintain the Field House as a major draw for tourists. Vernal City SECRET WITNESS Program 789-8888 Leanne Shay Community Affairs Manager U S WEST Communications (801) 626-5660 in Ogden U S WEST'S Contributions Demonstrate Commitment to Utah This month, I want to take the opportunity to tell you about some exciting partnerships that have developed between the U S WEST Foundation and various organizations in Utah. We have had a long-standing commitment to education, and that commitment has been demonstrated this year with approximately $1.7 million contributed to major educational programs, alone. Here is a brief overview of each of the programs: pro-grams: Multimedia in Education Grant: Utah State University is one of seven institutions across our 14-state region to receive a grant to develop a multimedia-instructional system known as the "Electronic Textbook Builder." The program will enable teachers to convert existing and new training material to multimedia programs using proven concepts of "how" we learn. The end result, our children will learn better and faster using interesting and challenging technological tools. U S WESTUtahLink Teacher Network: This project trains teachers in the use of new computer and Information Superhighway technologies. Each teacher who completes the program agrees to teach 10 more teachers or administrators. In the end, 3,000 Utah educators will know how to access and use the vast resources available on the Information Superhighway and be capable of sharing the experience and knowledge with their students. Connecting Teachers with Technology Award: The goal of this program is to encourage and reward teams of teachers who learned to use technology to enhance their curriculum. The winning program has students applying mathematical theories to solve real business cases. In turn, local businesses are having a direct impact on the curriculum. Raising Telecommunications Awareness in Utah: A host of statewide organizations organiza-tions joined U S WEST to sponsor a series of workshops designed to teach people in communities throughout Utah about the Information Superhighway. What it is, what it takes to access it, what is on it and how they can use it U S WEST Children & Families Network: This project provides an easy-to-use, low-cost connection to a regional network of information, education and consultation for professionals working with children and families in crisis or facing major challenges. This specialized resource network will provide ready and timely access to these resources. It will enhance and expand local counselor's and professional's abilities to help Utah's children and families in need. Bottom line: We are in the connections business - helping customers share communications, information and entertainment - in local markets worldwide. These programs will help bring the benefits of the Information Superhighway to your very door. (Advertorial paid for by US WEST Stockholders) and Glen McKce agreed to accept the road into the county and begin planning to improve the bridge. Commissioner Merrell voted against the action. Den Bridges suggested the county start paving roads "where the people peo-ple are going to use them." Uintah County Search and Rescue volunteers responded to two reports of lost hunters over the Labor Day Weekend. One hunter was lost in the Pol Holes area and the other was near Hacking Lake. Both hunters were located safe and sound. Members of the Search and Rescue dedicate countless hours with no compensation. "The Sheriff's Department commends com-mends these dedicated members and would like to express our sincere thanks for a job well done," said Uintah County Sheriff Rick Hawkins.
