Even Deseret Generation and Transmission has planters and will be expanding its project this year. Crews from Vernal City have al- ready been out working the soil and getting it prepared for this year's planting. Committee members have been selling planters to those businesses who do not have them and selling additional planters to those already participating. With 80 more planters along Main Street, the total is over 700. Businesses or individuals wishing to buy planters may contact Judy Chambley at 789-1211 or Scarles Nursery at 789-5407. "The Vernal area has gained quite a favorable reputation for the beautiful beau-tiful flowers we display, said Chambley Chamber Director. " This image reflects a prideful, caring community. SPORTS WrfMr'.:. -Cfesi BASIN Im1! IPX rT The Uintah track team went into action again yesterday in a tri-meet with Green River and Duchesne. Working with a very young group, Head Coach Curg Belcher was up beat about the future. "This team is basically made up of freshmen and sophomores. The personal improvement improve-ment these kids are enjoying each meet is a great incentive" the coach stated. "We are getting beat right now, but by the time Region rolls around, these kids are going to surprise some people and be very competitive." competi-tive." To illustrate the coaches point consider: Jarod Jenkins started the long jump at around 15 feet, yesterday yester-day he went 20. Ben Wilson started the shot at around 40 feet, yesterday he threw 43-6. Clint Pederson has jumped 6-2 in the high jump, which is the qualifying height for state. ., On the girls side, the team is enjoying en-joying the same kind of success. In yesterdays meet, Camille Collett won the 200, 400 and ran on the winning mile relay team. Camille has consistently improved her times each meet. Jennifer Darlington has taken almost IS seconds sec-onds off her times in the distance events. Rusty Cook has also improved im-proved by over 10 seconds in the 880. With this group of kids and others, Uintah has a fine nucleus to climb back into the picture in Utah track competition. The Utes will compete in several weekend meets before traveling to Region the 12th and 13th of May at Wasatch. Las: a'. ? r 31 I ' TRENT COLTON explains his winning strategy to interested fan. For the game, Mansfield went three for three, Stevens scored three times at the lead-off position and Keiver had three RBI's. The victory moved Uintah to 5-3 for the year and gave them a modest four game winning streak heading into yesterdays contest with Lehi. Uintah started Brian Fletcher against Lehi and he responded with his best effort of the year. ,Not only did Fletcher go the distance, dis-tance, he did it convincingly pitching pitch-ing a two hit 4-3 victory. Brian gave up a single in the second and a double dou-ble in the fourth. It was a good thing Fletcher was on because the normally normal-ly hot Ute bats were ice cold. After holding Lehi scoreless, Uintah looked as if they would start this game off the same way they had in previous contests. The Utes loaded the bases but were unable to capitalize, stranding the runners there. Lehi scored first in the top half of the second pushing one run across. Uintah went in order. Lehi again scored in the third, '.his time on a hit batter, an error and a walk to take a 2-0 lead. The Utes finally got their bats going go-ing when Mansfield walked, Murray followed with an RBI triple scoring Scott and then scored himself on a Olsen sacrifice to center to tie the score at 2-2. Lehi came right back in the fourth with another run to go up 3-2. The Utes came back with two runs of their own when Keiver and Fletcher singled and advanced to score on Billy Meyers' single. Meyers stole second and then was doubled up after a line shot by Stevens was snagged by the pitcher and tossed to the bag. Fletcher turned it up a notch the next two innings to seal the victory for the Utes, 4-3. The Utes got balanced bal-anced hitting throughout the lineup in this one as well as very tough defense. de-fense. Coterillo made several nice grabs in left field including a diving catch of a sinking line drive. The Utes have now won five straight, are 6-3 over-all and 2-0 in Region.
