Vernal's finest swats Killer Bees in golf, Softball action Vernal Express Wednesday, August 29, 1990 19 Local golfers heat up in prep for Rifle Creek Two years after the "Killer Bees", also affectionately known as the Utah Highway Patrol, stung Vernal's finest with a lopsided, beat em til it hurts basketball win in the friendly rivalry between the two in over-the-hill gang sports, the men in blue got a measure of their tails back this week. First, the two squared off at golf in the five man scramble which the Vernal Police won narrowly by a score of 66-67, then the two teed off (with help from the county moun-ties, moun-ties, aka Uintah County Sheriff's Department) on the Softball field. The game was nip and tuck as the over the hill, but don't know it yet crowd played some decent ball for seven innings before Vcmal Police opened up a five point margin to win 16-11. Reportedly, there were no major injuries and both teams laughed off any seriousness and then broke bread together. The event was a success suc-cess in enhancing intcr-departmen-tal cooperation and will be renewed in various sports on an ongoing basis. ba-sis. In local golf circles the Vernal men are heating up in preparation for the Annual Rifle Labor Day Tournament which starts Saturday in Rifle Creek, Colo. Local Club Champion Craig Hart is playing some of the best golf ever seen at the local links as he has had only one round in the 70's in the past three weeks. Everything else in the 60's including setting the new course record at 62. Last week Dinaland Pro Kent McCurdy shot a 69 against' Hart and still lost by seven sev-en shots. Local golfer Gary Cutler is also tuning up. He has a string of Eagles going on number two over the past week, four to be exact. In a recent round he birdied three holes and then eagled the 420 yard par 4, number four hole. From 175 yards out, playing with Jerry Pope and Bob Downard, Cutler hit an eight iron on the approach shot into the cup on the fly for a rare eagle on a par four hole. Especially, the long and difficult number four hole. About 50 locals will travel to Rifle Friday to begin preparation on the new tough 18 hole layout which includes some of the most scenic holes in the three state area.
