Show 18 Vernal Expre Wednesday, August 8, 1990 Call 789-3511 City rocws u At Wednesday's Vernal City Council Meeting, Vernal City officially offi-cially thanked and recognized the Vernal Youth (Babe Ruth) Baseball Association and specifically Joe B. (Jody) Murray and Dan Mortensen for their extraordinary dedication and efforts in leading the $100,000 rebuilding effort. Citing the city's appreciation for the hard work and investment in the complex, Mayor Leonard Heeney, personally thanked League President Steve Oldroyd, Murray and Mortensen on behalf of the Vernal City Council. The City presented jackets to Murray and Mortensen as a token of their appreciation and presented a plaque to Oldroyd in behalf of the membership of the association, who 1 V y j it 7 . Babe Ruth officials also joined the city in praising the effort as they awarded Oldroyd, Murray, and Mortensen commemorative desk clocks, and watches to a dozen oth- . er key people. During Oldroyds one year tenure as president of the association, the fields have been conditioned, fences replaced and repaired, lights installed, in-stalled, and a move to Babe Ruth completed. The Association earlier this year obtained funding from Vernal City and Uintah County in the amount of $15,000 to make improvements under un-der a plan which provides that the sum be paid back within three or four years. President Oldroyd pre- sented the city with a $5,000 check which represented the first install ment on that loan. In addition the Association poured in the neighborhood of $100,000 in volunteer labor, equipment, and materials ma-terials into the baseball complex taking it a giant step towards returning return-ing to one of the best in the state. The Triple Nationals included 51 teams from 34 states and the local team which annually wins everything every-thing there is to win in Vernal and who were invited to the nationals in Oklahoma last year the tournament. Youngs, which is coached and owned by Frank Young, opened the tournament Friday morning against Grain Milters, the Oregon Slate Champions picked early to be a top 4 contender, and handed the Millers an opening loss 12-8.
