Show 16 Vernal Express Wednesday, August 8, 1933 Hatch reigns as Miss Uintah B asm After releasing her crown last month as Miss Uintah County, Barbera Hatch is back, having won the Miss Uintah Basin crown Aug. 1 at the Uintah Basin Industrial Conference Pageant. Barbera is the daughter of Dennis and Jan Hatch of Vernal. Placing as first runner-up was Sandra Sather, daughter of Sandra and Bob Sather of VeniaJ. Sather placed first in the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. compe-titions. Second attendant was Kim Hunt, daughter of Bruce and Sandra Hunt of Roosevelt Hunt won the community service award for her work as chair of the Heart Association drive in Roosevelt. Although she didn't have much time to prepare for it, Hatch said participating in the UBIC Pageant was a lot of fun. She started practicing practic-ing for the pageant at the end of. July, after the Miss Uintah County Pageant and worked quickly to learn the production number. She said she felt lucky to have had her Miss Utah gowns ready to use. Sather, who was also rushed from the Miss Uintah County Pageant to The UBIC Pageant, said she felt better about her performance this time around because, "I was a lot more prepared." Hatch said she enjoyed the judges' interview. "The judges were nice and easy to talk to." She said she had met one of the judges, the reigning Miss Utah, Jennifer Nakkan, from competing. Sather said she also enjoyed the interview . and especially the opportunity to talk to Nakkan. "I think she is the neatest person I have ever met," Sather said. For the talent competition, competi-tion, Hatch performed a classical ballet en point to Lionel Richie's "Ballerina Girl," which she choreographed chore-ographed herself. Hunt performed a Beethoven Rhondo piece on the piano for her talent selection. 'This pageant was neat because of all the support we received from the community," Hatch said. "They were really excited to see who the next queen would be and were very supportive. It was great to see how many people turned out." The high number of contestants, from Vcmal also pleased Hatch. "There were 1 1 girls in- the pageant, total, and five were from Vernal," she said. "I think that's great because usually , ,,- f , 1 t-; -?' Sather said she was very impressed im-pressed with the work pageant Director Pat Stringham put into the pageant. "She was very organized and prepared for everything," Sather said. "It was great to work with her." As Miss Uintah Basin, Hatch has received a $700 scholarship as well as a trophy and several hundred dollars dol-lars worth of gift certificates and cash prizes from merchants around the Uintah Basin. Sather received a $500 scholarship and gift certificate and Hunt received a $300 scholarship scholar-ship and gift certificate. Hatch's duties as Miss Uintah Basin include reigning over UBIC, ' although she said, "I will be available avail-able to help at other times if I am needed." As Miss Uintah Basin, Hatch automatically qualifies to compete in the Miss Utah Pageant next year. With that to look forward to, she said she will use these next months to work hard in preparation for her next competition. Sather said she. plans to continue competing in scholarship pageants, the next one being the Miss Utah State University Pageant this fall while she attends school in Logan. Hunt will be a senior at Union High School this fall. She has been involved in Drill Team and been on the honor roll. Golden Age Activities By Ada Murray Thursday, Aug. 9, the Senior Citizens will be going on a picnic trip to the Sheep Creek Memorial Park. The vans will leave the Center at 10 a.m. - Lunch will be furnished No potluck anymore. Around twenty people went on the historical trip to Nine Mile Canyon last Thursday. They report having had a wonderful time. Commodities will be given out Friday, Aug. 17, at the Golden Age Center for the Senior Citizens who are sixty years of age and over. Bailey Anderson and wife Gay, Pat Stewart and Stan Arias furnished fur-nished the program last Monday while everyone enjoyed their dinner. Thanks folks for sharing your talents tal-ents with us. Visitors at dinner were Reed and Pearl Preece, Kathy Proud, a daughter of Phyllis Warby, Norma Gardner's sister-in-law, Blanche Berg from Portland, Ore., Fern Dennis from Orem and Ron McKeeofTridell. Maxine Hershey went to Richland, Wash, to attend a class reunion. re-union. Winning at bingo Tuesday, July 24, were Elsie Mitchell and Myril Bodily with four games each. Mildred Long, Jean Staten and Patty Warby placed second with three games each. Last Tuesday, Mollie Stockton, Jean Staten and Carma Hacking were the winners at bingo with three games each. Elsie Mitchell and Mildred Long were winners for the month of July. A trip to the State Fair for Senior Citizens is being planned for Wednesday, Sept 12. They will stay overnight. The rooms will be double occupancy. The cost will be $35.00 This cost will not include your' meals. Those desiring to go must have their money paid by Aug. 31. Refreshments were furnished by the class members. One hundred and ten people enjoyed the dance. I hope those who have been in the hospital or have been ill at home are feeling up to par once more. They brought back a spirit stick, 44 superior awards, 4 excellent awards and a superior on their routine. Radio Club elects officers The Borderline Amateur Radio Club recently elected the following officers: Lee Clark KF7AC of Vemal as president; Jerry Goodrich N7JCP of Tridell as vice president; Marion Gilbert KA7LWE of Vernal as secretary; Ted Palmer N70CZ of Duchesne as treasurer; Lamond Harrison WX7L of Naples as public relations. The club held its annual field day competition near Grizzly Ridge this summer. Over 400 contacts with other hams in the United States were made in 24 hours, giving a score of 2,235 points. At the last club meeting held in Duchesne, members were visited by Rich Fisher NS7K, the American Radio Relay Leagues Utah section' manager and Bill Moyes NS7K, the Mercury Amateur Radio Associations area manger. These men informed them of what the Wasatch Front was doing with Ham radio. Residents can listen to the Amateur Radio Club members at the Gorge-Us Getaway Aug. 8-11 on the following frequencies: 7.25 MHZ, 14.3 MHZ, 21.35 MHZ, 146.52 MHZ and 147.1 MHZ. The club is providing radios for the Boy Scouts to talk with hams across the U.S. and around the world. JAMIE MURRAY, daughter of Brad and Cynthia Murray, modeled model-ed a units outfit she made for the Kids Can Sew summer fashion show. Nearly 40 students ages 6-17 participated in the Country Cottage School of Sewing Program.
