The panels were created by IBM to be used in company com-pany displays throughout the nation this year. The team was also featured on the 1988 World OM Finals souvenir poster and on the cover of folders containing press releases for national nation-al media. 1987 marked the first year that Utah participated on the world level as an association. Over 500 teams from around the United States and from foreign countries were represented at the competition. The Naples team performed their solution to the Straddle Structure Problem; teams compete to build a structure of balsa wood bound by certain specifications which will support a maximum amount of weight. Dubbed "Operation Naples", they appeared the third and the last day of the competition. Judges displayed obvious delight as they watched the special effects: music, costumes and props which brought the operating room to life. When the final scores were tallied, Naples placed seventh in style against 51 other teams. This especially espe-cially pleased the Naples contingent, contin-gent, as Utah is a newcomer to this event. Each state is allowed to send one team per problem for each division. divi-sion. When considering the relatively relative-ly few number of schools involved from Utah, (New York has 500 competing; Colo. 300) Utah schools held their own admirably well during dur-ing the event Lapoint Elementary captured first place in the spontaneous sponta-neous problem-solving competition. Utah team members were also able to spend time learning about our national government and history. histo-ry. During their stay, students visited visit-ed many significant historical sights including the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ml Vernon, the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, Vietnam Memorial, Ford's Theater, the White House and various Smiihsonians. Naples Elementary students participating par-ticipating in the event expressed their appreciation for the businesses and individuals who gave them financial fi-nancial support for the trip. h . -,JLd r f I - ft I .- S3 lM j 1 f . i NAPLES OM torn members, Lynn Mjne Judd.
