Ada Openshaw Phone 789-3145 Depression, the blues know the difference by Ashley Valley Medical Center Amie Jones We hear about depression and suicide all the time, but how much do we know about it? Depression is different from what we call "the blues." When you get "the blues" you may feel the following: Feelings of loneliness, boredom, disinterest in surroundings, anxiety, restlessness, mild insomnia or other changes in sleep patterns. These symptoms are short-term and relieved by time, change of pace, decreased stress, change in activity, or occasional counseling. Depression is an illness with many causes. Personal Losses-retirement, loss of friends, family, pets. Many times these losses come too close together, and a person is not able to grieve fully for each loss. Loss of Health-perceived or actual disabilities which threaten an individual's independence. Social Stresses-changes in an individual's role in society. An individual may go from breadwinner to unemployment or retirement. Biochemical Imbalances-imbalances Imbalances-imbalances can occur within the brain, and cause depression that tends to reoccur. Usually with depression the symptoms will last at least 4-6 weeks or longer. Some symptoms of depression arc: Low or altered mood; anxious, restless, or fearful spells; increased or decreased appetite. Changes in sleep pattern: Insomnia; waking during regular sleep hours, being preoccupied with worries; waking very early without being able to return to sleep; needing to sleep all the lime. Limitations in activity: Docs not initiate activity; confused or nervous; moving more slowly; loss of interest in daily activities, i.e., grooming; withdrawing from social activities. Feelings of loss, guilt, low self-esteem, worthlcssness, or suicide. Preoccupation Pre-occupation with non-essentials. Health complaints-headaches, "rushing in the head," hearl pounding, stomach aches, constipation, diarrhej. Usually family and friends recognize the symptoms of d.'pesslinj first. Some barriers to recognizing depression are the fact that some people assume that depression is a normal part of the aging process. It is NOT! The depressed person may hide symptoms and be afraid treatment is too-expensive and not available. Most treatment is short-term, short-term, and some can be treated on an out-patient basis. Treatment is readily available at the Ashley Valley Medical Center's Life Balance Unit. Depression is a serious illness. If depression continues, it can lead to a number of serious consequences, delusions, hallucination, paranoia, or suicide. If you suspect that you or a member of the family is suffering from depression, call your doctor.
