Fifty-four Uintah High School athletes turned out for football this year, but 80 competed in tryouts last year. Uintah High School will host Union High School of Roosevelt, Friday in the season opener at 7:30 p.m. Admission Ad-mission will be free as the game will be held in Uintah's brand new stadium. The Utes will battle Carbon, September 5 and Provo, September 12 on the road. The Utes defeated Union, Carbon, Payson, Spanish Fork and Duchesne last year and competed in the state tournament for the first time in 20 years. Battling for the Uintah quarterback quarter-back position are senior Kenny Mohar, junior Gordon Limb and sophomore Kaleo Nawahine. Mohar and Limb started games at quarterback quarter-back last year. Limb was the starting quarterback for the Utes in the state tournament. "Mohar is an ideal quarterback because he has height, a strong arm and is a smart player. We just hope he doesn't get injured like he did last year. Mohar has looked real good so far," remarked head coach Hank Nawahine III. "Limb is only 5 feet 6 inches tall, but he is tough. He is a good runner and he will play a lot of quarterback. He is a good scrambling scrambl-ing quarterback. Nawahine has a good arm, is tall and knows the offense of-fense really well. Also battling for starting positions posi-tions are: Brian Southam, Lee SoVilz, Marty Woods, Eric Mulville, running backs; Scott Hardman, Todd Shiner, Jeff Shearer, receivers and Rhadd Wilier, tight end. There are many other players fighting for positions. posi-tions. The Utes have six offensive starters back this year in Mohar, S. Nawahine, Simper, Hatch, Johnson and Wiseman. All six plus Huber, Slade and Martin are seniors. Martin is a transfer from Casper, Wyoming. Silcox and Owens are juniors. Some possible defensive starters t V J ' i i - V 1 , 4' . are: S. Nawahine, Martin, middle linebackers; Hatch, nose tackle; Simper, Johnson, tackles; Wilier, Wiseman, defensive ends; Huber, strong safety; Limb, Hardman, cor-nerbacks cor-nerbacks and Mohar, free safety. Also battling for defensive positions are: Schulz, cornerback-strong safety; safe-ty; Silcox, cornerback; Chance Murray, Mur-ray, tackle; Chris Roberts, nose tackle; Mulville, defensive end; Woods, Troy Murray, middle linebackers. Other Ute athletes are also in contention for starting spots. "We are changing our offense completely com-pletely from last year. We are moving mov-ing to the veer offense and will have more play-action passes. The quarterback will have the option of handing off the ball, keeping it or pitching pit-ching to a back. The veer will open up the passing game hopefully," commented com-mented Nawahine. "We are learning a new defensive system and it will be real exciting. We are working on 40 and 50 defenses." The Union High School Cougars have a new head football coach in Paul Magio. Union has a good amount of starters back from last year. Competing for starting positions on the Union offensive team are: Eddy Samuels, senior; Kelly Smith, junior, quarterbacks; Seott Muirhcad, Ray Farnsworlh, fullbacks; Ray Havetiinc, Steve Burton, Devere Hunt, Donnie Brown, halfback; Trent Larsen, Marc Crozier, Buff Hartnston, Lunce Nielsen, Andy Ycrgen-sen. receivers; Martin Locke, center; Phillip Rcrtoch. Todd Handy, Mike llorroeks, guards and Troy Reidhead, Robert Buchanan, Trent Nelson, tackles. Samuels was Union llih School's starting quarterback last year and was one of the top offensive stars. Other starters back are tiertoch, Lotke. Harmslon ami Nielsen. Muirhead, Farnsworlh. Brown, Larsen, Handy and Reidheari saw nme varsity play last season, fluards Brrtoeh and Handy weigh about 20 pounds. Reidhead is at 210 pounds and Buchanan at IBO. Ilavetone is a transfer from Arizona. "We have been working on defen sive coverage and our offense. We have lieen gelling our timing hark. The Ute tennis team will battle Payson and Spanish Fork on the road, September 2 and will host Carbon, Car-bon, September 3; Provo, September 10 and Springville, September 13. Softball Tournament There will be a ladies Softball tournament held in conjunction with the Naples Energize Me Fair on September 5 & 6. The entrance fee will be $30.
