Burgess, who was the men's open singles title winner, win-ner, and Pye placed second in the men's doubles meet, which was also sponsored by Basin Sports and the Vernal City-Uintah County Recrea tion Department. The Wallis players weren't the only ones, who suffered a tennis beating as Burgess accidently served a shot into the back of partner, part-ner, Pye. Pye didn't turn over in pain and hit the playing surface as he stayed on his feet and helped his team to a semi-final win. Roosevelt's Sprouse and Garner had a bye in the first round and then they defeated Paul Stringham and championship. Sprouse and Garner reached the men's doubles championship match and Hardinger won a first round match over Marc and James Rose. Lynn Bigelow, Ken Golding, White and Gough had first round byes. White and Gough defeated Bigelow and Golding. The Wallis brothers had a bye in the first round and Doug Barlow and Kyle Batty defeated Duston Morten-son Morten-son and Jason Law, 6-3, 6-2. Brian and Steve Wallis beat Barlow and Batty, 6-0, 6-2. Buss Poulson, Adam Massey, Burgess and Pye had first round byes. Burgess and Pye downed Poulson and Massey, 6-2, 6-2. Bigelow and Golding captured the consolation title when they whipped Law and Mortenson, 6-4, 6-2. Law and Mortenson beat the Rose crew and Stringham and Hardinger. Husband-wife team of Steve and Tami Wallis reach the championship match when they defeated Drollinger and Slaugh, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. League Standings All seven teams in the American League East have .500 or better records as of day games on August 13. The first place team Boston is 65-47 and second place New York is 63-52. Last place Milwaukee is 56-56. There are only two teams, California, Califor-nia, 62-51 and Texas, 59-54, with .500 or better marks in the American League West. Five teams are under .500. Seattle has the worst mark at 49-67. Milwaukee at 56-56 in the American League East has a better mark than Kansas City in the American League West at 51-62, but Kansas City is in third place and Milwaukee is in .seventh place. St. Louis, Philadelphia and Los Angeles have similar records, but St. Louis and Philadelphia, 54-57, are 21 games behind the New York Mets, 75-36, in the National League East and the Dodgers, 55-58, are nine games behind the National League West leaders, Houston, 64-49. Atlanta is in last place in the National Na-tional League West at 52-60 and the Chicago Cubs have a similar record of 50-63 in the National League East. The last place team in the National League East is Pittsburgh at 45-66. The Braves are 11 1-2 games behind Houston, but Pittsburgh is 30 games behind first place New York Mets and the Mets have a 26 game lead over the Cubs. One Pitch Killer The San Diego Padres entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 7-4 lead, which seemed like a safe enough advantage with Rich "Goose" Gossage on the mound, but former teammate, Chris Chambliss drilled a two-out, three run homer to cap a four-run rally for an 8-7 win, Wednesday by Atlanta. Omar Moreno doubled off Gossage with one out for his fifth hit of the game. Ken Oberkfell was walked and after Dale Murphy struck out for out number two, Ken Griffey singled with two strikes jto score Moreno. Chambliss then blasted an 0-1 pitch over the right-center field fence for his second home run. The shot made a winner out of reliever Gene Garber. Chambliss, Griffey, Moreno and Gossage were members of the New York Yankees a few years ago. A three-run eighth-inning gave the Chicago Cubs, a 9-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pitt-sburgh Pirates, Wednesday. The key blow was a two-run homer by Shawon Dunston.
