Show 28 Vernal ExftmRdvertlsef wwioy, May 7, i986 Baseball fans root for pro sport heros - .j. N i ' f ' - f T-- Of 6, &uUtt Vernal Boys' Baseball Leagues had one of their earliest season starts in years during the late part of April and although the number one concern con-cern is putting the bat on the ball for base hits the young baseball players still have time to root for their favorite player or team in the world of professional baseball. Some older baseball fans have favorite pro baseball players of the past and present. pre-sent. "I like Babe Ruth. He's dead, but he was the greatest. I wish I could have seen him play. My favorite player of today is Dale Murphy of the Atlanta Braves," said youth baseball player Andy Sunkees. Ruth was the home run champion for years with 714 before the record was broken by Hank Aaron. Murphy is a two-time most valuable player and a past home run champion. "Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle were my favorite players when I played ball. I liked Mays. He was outstanding and hit the ball well," remarked Leon Roberts. "Mays was an all-around player. He could steal bases and hit for power. Mantle could hit from either side of the plate and was a good outfielder. Mantle played for the Yankees and they were the dynasty back then." Mays hit over 600 home runs while playing for the New York-San Francisco Fran-cisco Giants and New York Mets. He was second to Ruth in homers until Aaron moved into first place. Mantle was an outstanding power hitter, who spent his entire career with the New York Yankees. He finished with well over 500 homers. The Yankees competed in 13 out of 15 World Series from 1950 through 1964. "I like Reggie Jackson. He hits a lot of homers and I like how he hits the ball," commented Ryan Wright. Jackson was the leading hitter in the American League at .407 as of May 2. Jackson is a California Angel and has slugged five homers. He has over 500 career home runs. Jackson was a member of Oakland A's and New York Yankees World Series championship teams. Another baseball fan, Bert Clark remarked, "Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were my favorite players when I played ball. They were good fielders and good hitters. I like Rrggie Jackson because he has a good home run swing." "I like George Brett of the Kansas City Royals, lie gets a lot of hits and plays third base," stated Du-ston Hooks. Baseball fan, Cory Goodwin staird, "I tike I 'tie Hose, He It the t-o.1 and he has the hJu record, tic U a good athlete end he's Mr. Hustle." He was famous for going after bad pitches and connecting connec-ting with them for base hits. Berra has managed the New York Mets and Yankees. He coached both the Mets and Yankees in World Series. The Atlanta Braves have a number of players with Utah connections in Dale Murphy and Glenn Hubbard and thus the team has become one of the top choices as favorite team for many baseball fans in Utah. "My favorite team is the Atlanta Braves. I like Dale Murphy cause he drives the ball over the fence," commented Brett Oaks. "I like Dale Murphy now. He's number one as far as I'm concerned. He cut his hand catching a ball against the wall and he hit a home run the next day. He ran into a wall and had half a dozen stitches and came back and played," said Jay Anderson. When asked to comment on his favorite pro baseball player, Rulon Ewell said, "I like old Reggie Jackson. He's getting older, but he's still good. He has always been consis tent. I hate to see the good ones quit. He strikes out, but he hits home runs." The Atlanta Braves are a popular team, but the St. Louis Cardinals also have their fans and Chandlon Peisley said, "I like the Cardinals. Ozzie Smith is a good shortstop and I also like Willie McGee." Smith was batting .394 after ten games for the St. Louis Cardinals. Another professional baseball fan, Angela Smuin, commented, "I watch it (pro baseball) sometimes. I like the Yankees. I just watch the TV and let my dad tell me what's going on." Many father-son combinations are involved in Vernal Boys Baseball programs. Danny Long is a coach on the Braves, who defeated the Cubs, 16-15, for their second win in two years and his son Danny Long Jr. is a member of the Braves. "Mickey Mantle was my favorite player. lie was a good hitter and made good catches in the outfield and they (the Yankees) won all those World Series," staled Danny Long Sr. Danny Long Jr. remarked, "I like the Angels and Padres. I like Reggie Jackson and Steve Garvey." Garvey is a first baseman, who started his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and is now a member of the San Diego Padres. He has competed in World Series with the Dodgers and Padres and is a good defensive first baseman. Many baseball fans like power hitlers hit-lers such as Jackson, Mantle, Murphy Mur-phy and others, but Mozcy McCor-mick'a McCor-mick'a favorite player doesn't hit many homers. They are all very good, but my favorite team Is the Dodger. 1 like Steve Sax. lie is a gwd second baseman. He makes some errors, but he gels a lot of hits." Sax Is batting .313 in 73 at baU at of May 2 end had one homer and four runs batted in.
