Incumbents hang on at county convention Incumbent Republicans barely held their ground Monday, but most emerged emerg-ed with enough delegate votes to keep them in contention for the party primary election. Neal Domgaard, 4-year Uintah County Commission, was the only incumbent in-cumbent to be defeated in the convention. con-vention. Of the 180 delegates at the convention, Domgaard received 20 votes, Nyle C. Bigelow received 98 votes and Leo Snow, past Uintah County commissioner, received 62 votes. Both Snow and Bigelow echoed the underlining theme of the convention, tax reduction, in their 2-minute speeches to party delegates. Snow promised to be honest, reduce the budget and improve the county roads. Bigelow promised a sound, honest county budget, and that he was not backed by a special interest group. Snow and Bigelow will be on the ballot for the Republican primary election. In the two-year commission race Jim Reidhead, former Duchesne County Commissioner won the most delegate votes with 81, incumbent Bryce Caldwell received 54 votes. Caldwell and Reidhead will be in the primary. Others receiving delegate votes in the two-year commission position were John Millecam, 34 and MerilG.Snow.il. Reidhead promised to evaluate every department of county government govern-ment to determine where cuts could be made. Caldwell also promised to cut taxes with possibly some relief this year. Three cut in sheriff race In the heavily competitive race for county sheriff, incumbent Arden Stewart gained 83 votes, and Drew C. Christiansen received 69 votes. Brent Borcn received 8 votes, Tom Snyder had 20 voles and Dale W. Stevens, receive no votes. Richens promised full-time service and listed his skills as an independent auditor of counties and cities as his qualifications for the job. Richens and Pope will face each other in the primaries. Incumbent Mark Nash received 104 votes and his only challenger, Alvin G. Nash, gained 74 votes. Alvin Nash said that $42,000 per year was too much to pay a county attorney at-torney and promised to streamline the attorney's office. Mark Nash promised to continue to be an independent advocate for the county. In the county clerk race, Barsie Hatch received 104 votes and Dorothy C. Luck, incumbent, received receiv-ed 75 votes. Mrs. Luck promised to "continue to make things happen" in the county whether it be wood burning stove, air quality or Toad-flax Cress issues. Mrs. Hatch cited her 16 years in the county clerk's office over personnel and payroll as reasons to support her. Marie W. Gardner received the most support for county recorder, with 93 delegate votes. Connie W. Mott was a close second with 79 votes. Dorothy L. Slaugh received eight votes. Gardner and Mott will face each other in August primary. ; For county treasurer, Keith McDonald, 46 votes, and Donna Richins, 107 votes, are still in the running. run-ning. Gary B. The "guiding principle" number nine in the platform urges the exploration ex-ploration of a part-time county commission com-mission with a full-time county manager. "We feel this will bring about more involvement in county government, resulting in more prudent expenditures expen-ditures of tax dollars," states the platform. When the delegate vote was called to approve the platform, Roger Hacking said he thought that number nine should be deleted because it would show non-support for the current cur-rent full-time county commissioners. Republican Dan Price said the key word in the proposal is "exploring." "Other cities are doing fine under a part-time commission," said Price. "The platform does not say to do it or not, it just says to explore the idea." Mark Foley, party vice chairman, said that the reason the proposal was put in the party platform was because of the number of people approaching ap-proaching the central committee in favor of the proposal. "The party is not taking a stand either way on the issue," Foley said. "It is just urging exploration of the concept." For the current full-time county commission to make the shift to a part-time commission, it would require re-quire a resolution for commissioners to place the item on the ballot, or it would require a petition peti-tion with signitures of 10 percent of the registered voters in the county to place it on the ballot. Already two petitions have been drafted requesting the part-time commission. One of the petitions is being sponsored by the Uintah Taxpayers Tax-payers Association. "Such a move would be beneficial in many ways." Foley said not speaking speak-ing for the Republican Party. "It would get a lot better people to run for office, and meetings would be at night when the public could attend." "How many people can attend the county commission meeting from 9 a m. to 12 noon on Mondays?" At the convention, the motion to delete the part time commission proposal pro-posal from the party platform was defeated 271i3 by county delegates. The platform was unanimously supported, sup-ported, with the part time commission commis-sion clause included. Current I'mtah County commissioner! commis-sioner!
