Gibbons earns Scout award Looking at Life By Rev. Earl Menchhofer, Pastor Kingsbury Community Church United Church of Christ What does Easter mean to me? Stately church with cushioned pew, Where, Lenten season gone at last And days of self-denial past, Richly-clad, devoted throngs Of worshippers unite in songs of praise in lily-scented air? Is this what makes your Easter fair? Does it mean the end of Winter's reign Bright skies and welcome warmth again, Singing of birds, budding of trees, Sweet spring odors on the breeze From daffodil and crocus bed And balsom branches overhead? Sad is the world and cold and gray If this is all of Easter day. But if this blessed season brings, A firmer faith in holy things: Assurance of a living Lord; A strengthening of the tender chord Of love that binds us to the life to come Where loved ones 'wait us in the heavenly home, No pain or loss can e'er efface the bliss Dear friend of Easter, when it means all this. May Ricker Conrad The 40 day period of Lent (not counting coun-ting Sundays) will soon end for this year. Lent is the season of repentance, self-examination and awareness of the hurts of the people of the world. Lent is the time appointed in the church through the centuries to recognize 1) that we are called by God, 2) that we look toward a divine promise pro-mise and 3) that the life God gives we are not able to earn and do not deserve but is given by God to a repentant and humble spirit. It is only after we search the darkness of our inner beings that we can fully appreciate the joy of Easter. In essence, we have to do our homework in order to have a fuller meaning of Easter. By self-examining ourselves and being aware of the hurts of others we can better appreciate the sacrifice which Jesus made for us. When we take more seriously our vows to follow Jesus as Savior, we can experience a renewal in our lives of God's power, joy and happiness. Then we can celebrate the Resurrection and victory of Easter Sunday with even greater understanding and enthusiasm. Holy Week events at St. Paul's Episcopal This is a glorious time in the life and work of those in the congregation of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. According to The Reverend M. Gene Hutchins, Holy Ho-ly Week is the most important week of the church year as it is a week of preparation for the coming of The Lord. The Holy Week journey begins on Palm Sunday at 10:00 a.m. when palm fronds are carried in a procession into in-to the church to commemorate The Lord's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Palm crosses will also be distributed to the congregation as the procession enters the building. On Wednesday night, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the traditional Seder meal will be served in the pari.sh house. The Seder (meaning order) is a ritualistic dinner which is the most important part of the Jewish Passover celebration. celebra-tion. Many of the Protestant churches celebrate this meal to keep in touch with their Jewish roots. The ritual of the seder meal commemorates the exodus ex-odus of the Jews from Egypt. On Thursday, which is called Maundy Maun-dy Thursday, the service will begin at 7:30 p m. This service will Include the traditional 'Washing of Feet', the striping of the altar and the veiling of the crosses. Timothy's scout leader is Howard Cleavinger. He is a member of Cub Pack 264 and attends Maeser Elementary School where he is in the 5th grade. Elder Jim Shirley Elder Clark Mott Jim Shirley Elder Mott back to serve mission from mission Special worship service planned for Holy Week Elder Jim Shirley, son of Dale and Charleen Stewart and the late Leonard Self, has accepted an LDS mission call to the Montevideo Uruguay mission. His farewell will be Sunday, March 23 at 9:45 a.m. in the Vernal 3rd Ward, 475 West 100 So. Elder Shirley will enter the Missionary Mis-sionary Training Center in Provo Thursday April 3. Elder Clark Mott will return March 19 from serving in the Georgia Atlanta Atlan-ta LDS Mission. He served as a junior and senior companion also as a district leader. He will report his mission March 23 at 9:50 a.m. in the Maeser Stake Building, 2745 W. 1000 N. Elder Mott is the son of Vaughn and Margie Mott. Making Family Life More Fun During Holy Week two special worship wor-ship services will be held at Kingsbury Community Church, United Church of Christ, according to Pastor Earl Menchhofer. Men-chhofer. On Maundy Thursday, March 27, 7:30 p.m. there will be a Communion Commu-nion and Tenebrae Service. The Tenabrae Service is an adaptition of an early fourth century service. The gradual extinguishing of the Lights is symbolic of the flight of the disciples, the approach of the dark hate of Jesus' enemies, and the passion of Jesus. The moment of total darkness recalls the days Jesus was in the tomb. The relighting of the single central candle is prophecy of the Easter soon to dawn. The service on Good Friday, March 28, will also be at 7:30 p.m. This service, ser-vice, Pastor Earl said, will focus on the death and crucifixion of Jesus. The service will consist of Lenten hymns, prayers and scripture passages which describe "the way of the cross." On Easter Sunday, March 30, Holy Week is concluded and will be observed observ-ed with a sunrise service, 6:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. The service will be one of joy and celebration as the congregation congrega-tion celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. The regular worship service will be at 11 a.m., according to Pastor Earl. Ken Kindt, chair of the Diaconate of Kingsbury Church, also noted that the annual Diaconate Easter breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. in the Kingsbury Community House. 'The Watch' lasting until noon Friday. The Good Friday liturgy begins at noon. It begins and ends in the silence of the darkened church. Lessons will be read from noon until 3:00 p.m. Holy Ho-ly Communion will be distributed from the Reserve Sacraments at noon. People Peo-ple are free to come and go during the service. Hot Cross buns will be served serv-ed in the parish house following the reading of the liturgy. On Holy Saturday there will be a brief service of prayer at 12:00 Noon. The Great Vigil of Easter will begin at 8:00 p.m. Saturday and Holy Baptism Bap-tism will be administered. The first service of Easter will be a sun rise service at 6:30 a.m. followed by a breakfast in the parish house at 8:00 a.m. The Easter Day service will begin at 10:00 a.m. this Is the day we celebrate the resurrection of The Ird and is the high point of Holy Week and the most glorious celebration of the year at St. i'aul's. An Easter egg hunt will be held in the church yard for the children following the Kaster celebration. It makes an excellent treat for the whole family to share. There are many activities that bring families closer together. Sitting Sit-ting before a crackling fire in the winter sharing stories. Raking leaves in the fall bring hot chocolate-flavored rewards. Summertime Summer-time picnics at the beach or park make good use of warm days and long evenings. Even sharing photographs photo-graphs of events in the past can make everyone feel warm inside. Food usually plays a role in whatever what-ever activity your family chooses to enjoy. Whether it's roasting frankfurters, making hot chocolate or baking cookies together. ' You and your family can just sit back and enjoy togetherness with some freshly popped popcorn and a favorite board game or that amusing amus-ing home vjdeo. To our many friends and relatives; we are truly grateful for the kind and sincere sympathy shown us in the loss of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. For the beautiful floral offerings, for the generous donations and to the Clines 3rd Ward Bishopric and Relief Society for the lovely funeral service. For the beautiful musical numbers, the prayers offered in our behalf, the food brought to our homes and the friends who came and served and to the pallbearers and all others who assisted during our breavement. We shall always be grateful. Special thanks to Glenna Murray, Cuyla and Merlin Norton, Rachel Phillips and the Thomson Mortuary.
