(7 ' r ' ' , I POSTER WINNERS, John; Dilworth, 1st place; Laurie Jones, 2nd place; and Margaret Rich, 3rd place; accept the checks from Rae Jacobsen Three Vernal students are winners in JTPA contest "We had a good amount of entries from all over the Basin," said Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) director Rae Jacobsen as she displayed the 47 posters entered in a recent contest. Under the sponsorship of the Private Industry Council, which oversees JTPA, students were challenged to depict the positive purposes pur-poses of the job seeking, training and employer co-op program in a poster design. According to Jacobsen, letters announcing an-nouncing the contest were sent to Uintah, Union and Duchesne High Schools, Vernal, West and Roosevelt Junior Highs and Manila and Ta-biona Ta-biona Schools. On March 14 the posters were judged judg-ed by the Private Industry Council. The names of the artists and their schools were not known to the selecting selec-ting judges. John Dilworth, a Vernal Junior High 8th grader, won first place for his poster while Laurie Jones, a senior at Uintah High took second and 9th grader of Vernal Junior High, Margaret Rich won third. The poster winners received $100, $50 and $25 respectively for their efforts. Davis students given exciting art instruction Davis Elementary 2nd and 3rd graders have spent an exciting few weeks with artists in residence who have been teaching them some new concepts. Larnie Fox visited Feb. 10-13 and taught line drawing with magic markers. The children learned that lines can express feelings. For example, exam-ple, jagged and pointed lines express anger and rounded lines express happiness. hap-piness. Texture was taught by using repeated shapes to fill in space giving an illusion of texture. Pictures of under water scenes were made with both crayons and oil pastels. They created the "creature living under my bed" with magic markers. The lesson was geared to training children to look and plan ahead before starting an art project, and how to incorporate their mistakes so that don't detract from the picture. Pointilism, a technique of creating subjects with tiny dots, was used by the children in making trees. The artists ar-tists in residence teaching is part of a new art core curriculum program being be-ing piloted in the district. Dace will join with other vocal students from six states in rehearsals and a concert given Saturday evening. Each student was chosen to attend this select choir by judges who reviewed a taped audition sent in by them. He has recently returned from attending atten-ding the Wyoming allstate choir, which is a select representation of the vocal students of Wyoming and is also judged by taped audition. The 15-year-old singer musician is a freshman at Evanston High School and is active in the music program there and also plays the trombone with the Evanston Civic Orchestra.
