Show 2 Vernal Express Friday, Morch t - V TWO-MAN CONSTRUCTION materials to Ashley Springs Construction to pick up on Upper Stillwater Dam After a quiet winter, Tyger Construction Con-struction Company is preparing to return to work on the construction of the Upper Stillwater Dam, in Rock Creek Canyon, Duchesne County. Virtually all construction on the project ceased prior to Christmas and very little production work has been accomplished, despite the mild winter, due to low temperatures. The Upper Stillwater Dam, the main collection feature of the Strawberry Aqueduct of the Central Utah Project, will be the country's largest roller compacted concrete dam when it is completed in 1988. Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is similar in many ways to conventional conven-tional concrete, the main difference is that it is placed and compacted with heavy earth moving equipment. RCC is mixed in a moist condition then spread and compacted in horizontal layers or lifts using steel drum vibratory rollers. The 1986 season will be the most productive of the project. The first two construction seasons were spent preparing the foundation and getting aggregate and concrete production plants ready. This season will see RCC placement in full swing. The dam will be raised over 120 feet this year, and when complete, will reach a height of 270 feet with a crest length of over 2,700 feet. Although RCC is not scheduled to begin until after the first of May, work has started on preparing production pro-duction plants and increasing storage capacities to meet this year's production schedule. The job should reach its maximum employment of approximately 300 people by early June. Tyger officials believe that a large percentage of last season's work force will return this year. "Our position as an open shop contractor con-tractor has enabled us to benefit the local economy in our hiring practices," prac-tices," said Carl Clous, the project's personnel manager. RCC placement and plant crews are scheduled to work around the clock this season. "This schedule will allow us to reduce overtime and permit the employment of as many people as possible," Clous said. Work will soon begin by dewater-ing dewater-ing the foundation followed by opening open-ing the quarry and starting excavation excava-tion and erection on downstream structures such as the pipeline con Workshop scheduled A transportation work.shnp concer ning haiardous materials will be held Tuesday, March 25 from 6 p nv to 10 p m, at the Naplc Fire Station, 1001 East loo South. Immediately Im-mediately following dewatering, foundation cleanup will begin which will be followed closely by RCC placement . The project should be in full operation by the middle of June. Due to safety considerations, all people being hired or returning to the job this season will be required to acknowledge acceptance of Tyger's "No DrugNo Alcohol" policy requiring requir-ing screening and testing of all employees. "Responsible employers everywhere must give a clear signal that the use of non-prescription drugs and alcohol in the workplace is wrong and attempts must be made to discourage its use and influence in society," Emil Antoine, project's business manager said. Although it will be necessary to once again close the Rock Creek Road to the public because of construction con-struction activity during the construction con-struction season, plans now call for opening the road to the public on weekends only, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Construction traffic will consist of sand hauling trucks and approximately 100 loads of fly ash and cement a day to be used in the RCC mix. fis Vernal I PUT SONNE MERCUROCHROME ON Wt 6RANPDAU6HTERS SKINNED EL-BO AMD SHE SAID IT, MADE IT 5 MART SO 1 PUT SOME 'Lets get fit for the future' to be thrust of health month "Let's get fit for the future" is the challenge of the Uintah Basin Health Month as proclaimed by county and city officials for April.
