SMALL SCREENS resembling television sets have installed into the security system to monitor visual activity in the jail. A total of 27 cameras have been installed throughout the jail. Army National Guard ease costs of higher educations The cost of secondary education will be somewhat more affordable for members of the Army National Guard. A new G.I. bill went into effect July 1 and replaces the former bill. The bill is available for part-time guardsmen guard-smen as well as full-time ones who enlisted in the service for at least six years. The new bill is strictly educational in nature and docs not offer some of the benefits as the previous C I. However, the new bill offers more funding for educational purposes than the previous bill. Enlistees are eligible for $H0 per month up to 36 months for a total of sr,tH0 in funds for education. In the past the GI. bill offered $4,000 In scholarship money. The program pro-gram is not limited to guardsmen who chose college as their choice of furthering their secondary education, educa-tion, but is also open to those who wish to go to a trade or technical school. Guardsmen who have received their bachelors degrees may use the bill to complete their masters or for additional training in their field of expertise. ex-pertise. Incentives to further their education are also available for guardsmen who are unable to attend college or other higher learning institution in-stitution on a full time basis. Students who maintain at least nine credit hours are eligible for $107 and those who attend only part lime or maintain six credit hours are eligible eligi-ble for $70 per month. If the officer fails to check in at a certain time an alarm will sound and the controller will be able to use the cameras and audio equipment to locate officers and determine if a problem exists. The safety monitors will not require re-quire any external power to operate. Walkie talkies carried by the officers will also have a number of safety features. Another safety feature in the jail is in the interior doors. All interior in-terior doors are of solid steel construction con-struction except for the holding cell doors and doors in two sally ports (secure areas). With the new security system additional addi-tional services will also be available at the jail. Because the electronic system will get rid of the manual monitoring of jail activities and the switch to non-contact visitation, visiting hours at the jail will be increased. in-creased. Currently prisoners may only on-ly receive visitors on Sundays from 12 noon until 3 p.m. Prior to moving into the new jail all employees will be required to com-' plete 40 hours of training on the new? system. CINDY GALE Roosevelt fire burns carwash A fire which broke out at approximately approx-imately 9:40 p.m. did an estimated $15,000 to $20,000 in damage to a car-wash car-wash and convenience store in Roosevelt Tuesday evening. The blaze at the Surcfast Car Wash and Convenience Store Is believed to have been caused by leaking gasoline fumes from an underground storage tank. The store and carwash are owned own-ed by Mirl Jennings, Roosevelt, and have been open for less than one year. Jennings said that the fire started In a utility room In the middle of the six-bay carwash. Damage was restricted to the carwash and no one was injured in the blaze.
