Some fishermen net limits, but some fish to strike the bait on his hook in Steinaker suffer a long wait for a fish. How to verify record breaker By Hartt Wixom, Vernal Express Outdoors Writer Going after a whopper fish this season? Then you might as well see if its a record catch. First, there are the state records. If you can subdue a grayling weighing more than one pound one-half ounce, you've got it. Yep, that is the Utah standard for Thymallus Arcticus at this moment. A fair fish from the Uinta Uin-ta Mountains. There are bigger ones in the western Uintas. Try Blue, Marjorie, Round, Fish, Sand, Buckeye. At the inlet to some of these ponds I've witnessed grayling which would easily break the record. Likewise, there are larger golden trout (one at about two pounds would do nicely) than the state mark held by my old fishing companion Breck Tuttle. Largemouth bass, crappie, and a few other marks are bustable. You won't easily, however, top the giant rainbow, cutthroat, brown, lake trout records. I think there is a brook trout in the Beehive State better than Milton Taft's 7'-pounder. I've heard Taft say so himself, probably pro-bably where he caught the other one in a high Boulder Mountain swamp. I believe it could be beaten in a Uinta Lake, perhaps one seldom worked at the top of the West Fork Whiterocks, or upper Yellowstone drainages. Or maybe a "sleeper" like Rainbow Lake on the Uinta River highlands. So, how do you go about proving your lunker is a record? Don't clean it! Keep it cold until you can get it to a dependable (certified) weighing scale like that at a post office. Get witnesses to the weighing, the postal clerks, or if possible a conservation officer. of-ficer. Take pictures. Send the results to the Utah Div. Wildlife Resources, 1596 W. No. Temple, Tem-ple, SLC, Utah, 84106. While you are it, maybe your pride and joy will also top one of the nationl line class records. If you used say 2-lb. test to catch a cutthroat as long as your arm, check with the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, Box 33, Hayward, Wise, 54843. You'll want a "records" sheet from them, but in general, do the following: Weigh your fish once in the presence of two witnesses who are not in your fishing -par ty; nor relatives, and get their names, addresses, and signatures as to the species and weight of your catch. Measure length, and girth, or circumference at the widest point. In length, get it to any fork in tail, and also to end of tail itself. Have a professional such as UDWR employee positively Identify species caught. Get a color photo, clear, sharp, and close. As for not cleaning the fish out, this will not only give you the full weight, but is best for the fish taxidermist later. If possible, keep it frozen, and thaw only when handing over for mounting, or eating. For the line verification, save at least 25 feet with the hook or lure still attached. (Fly or lure used can be returned later.) To mail in line for sampling, wind it around notched cardboard. Specify if the catch was taken trolling, or casting, or for that matter, exactly how you caught it. Don't let anyone else touch your fishing rod either, for it has to be hooked, hook-ed, fought, and landed by the record claimee alone. Many world categories are open for some species in certain line classes. For example, many of the salmon. So if you travel to fish, check the record book. A list of state records can be . easily obtained from the state wildlife , office, address listed above. You might as well be the next record holder! Some of the present ones are out there trying to catch a bigger one. Interestingly, many of those who do hold the top piscatorial marks are weekend anglers like most of you. They simply matched their skills with a modicum of luck.
