Show .dnesdoy, March 7, 1984 Vemfll ExpfOSS 2 1 J fie The basketball season has been a rough one for the Uintah Utes, but it ended on a happy note Wednesday in Vernal as the Uintah High School junior varsity team rallied in the second se-cond half for a 60-54 victory over the American Fork Cavemen. The win over the Cavemen was the fourth win of the year for the JV Utes, who also defeated Rangely, Grand Junction Central and Timpview. The Utes also lost some close games to Orem and Mountain View. A 9-3 lead was gained by American Fork, but the Uintah Utes outscored the Cavemen, 6 to 2 in the rest of the first quarter to enter the second quarter behind by only two points at 11-9. Keams led the Utes in the first quarter with four points on two field goals and Horrocks popped in three points on a field goal and free throw. Kenny Rasmussen fired in two points on field goal. Chad Robinson and Roy Bond led the American Fork team with four points each in the second quarter and J. R. Martin added three points. Robinson popped in one free throw and Wade Murdock put in a rebound basket to give the American Fork team a five point lead of 14-9, but a two-pointer by Horrocks sliced the Cavemen's lead to three points once again. However, American Fork scored three points on a field goal by Bond and free throw by Todd Eliason to grab a 20-15 lead. The Utes scored four points on a field goal by Keams and free throws by David Gurr and Joe LeBeau to put the Uintah team within three points of the American Fork lead at 22-19. The Utes were behind by three points after two quarters of action, but a mighty rally in the third quarter gave the Uintah team a five point lead of 39 to 34. The Utes were ahead 32-30 with three minutes left in the third quarter and added another field goal for a 34-30 lead. American Fork's Ekcles flipped in a field goal, but Horrocks Hor-rocks returned a four point lead of 36 to 32 to the Uintah Utes due to a successful suc-cessful two-pointer. American Fork connected on a field goal to cut Uintah's lead to two points, but LeBeau popped in a two-pointer and Keams hit one out of two free throws to put the Uintah Utes up by five points, 39-34, at the end of the third quarter. Eckles and Robinson led the American Fork team in the third quarter with four points on two field goals. David Smith fired in one field goal for the American Fork Cavemen in the third quarter. American Fork scored a field goal to cut Uintah's lead to three points, but a field goal by Horrocks put the Utes up by five points again at 41-36. Robinson Robin-son of American Fork popped in a shot, but a three-point play by Keams increased the Uintah Ute lead to six points at 44-38. The Cavemen gained one point on a free throw, but Rasmussen burned the hoop for two and gave Uintah a seven point lead of 46 to 39. American Fork erased a good portion of the Ute lead in quick fashion as they scored six of the next seven points on two field goals by Bean and two free throws by Eliason to come within two points of the Ute advantage at 47-45. Gurr popped pop-ped in one free throw for the Utes. A free throw by Keams increased the Ute lead to three points at 48 to 45, but three free thows by Martin tied up the game at 48-48 with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter. Derick Adams gained his first and only points in the ball game on a field goal to return a two point lead of 50-48 to the Uintah Utes. Horrocks put in two free throws to give the Utes a four point advantage of 52-48 with 2:47 left. American Fork sliced Uintah's lead to two points on a field goal, but Horrocks Hor-rocks scored to put the Utes ahead by four points at 54-50. The Cavemen scored a field goal to drop Uintah's lead to one point at 55-54, but Horrocks put in one free throw for a 56-54 advantage. American Fork missed a shot at the basket with eight seconds left and the Uintah Utes snared the rebound. Horrocks Hor-rocks connected on three shots from the foul line and Rasmussen popped in one free throw to make the final score: Uintah, 60 and American Fork, 54. Horrocks led the Utes in the fourth quarter with ten points on two field goals and six free throws. Keams added add-ed four points on two free throws and one field goal. Rasmussen scored three points. Adams popped in one field goal. Taylor and Gurr put in one point each. Bean scored six points on three field goals in the fourth quarter for American Fork. Eliason fired in six points in the fourth quarter for the Cavemen on four free throws and one field goal. Robinson and Martin scored three points. Smith added two points. Uintah's Horrocks was the number one scorer in the game at 26 points. He fired in eight field goals and hit 10 out of 14 free throws. Keams added 13 points. He flipped in five field goals and hit 3 out of 6 free throws. Also scoring scor-ing for Uintah were: LeBeau, 6; Rasmussen, 5; Taylor, 3; Adams, 2 Gurr and Mulville, 2. The Utes hit 18 out of 33 free throws and put in 21 field goals. Robinson led the Cavemen with 12 points and Martin put in ten counters. Robinson fired in five field goals and hit 2 out of 3 free throws. Martin put in three field goals and hit 4 out of 6 free throws.
