HistoryScience Fair at Manila A HistoryScience Fair was conducted con-ducted at the Manila High School gymnasium gym-nasium from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 14. There were many projects on display. The history teacher at Manila High School is Bill Carter. Richard Coburn is the science teacher. Projects in science include projects such as icebergs, ballistics, animals and insects. in-sects. History projects included ancient an-cient tombs, national, state and local history. There were 3 place winners in both the junior and senior divisions in both the science and history displays. Matthew Briggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Briggs was the over all winner (junior and senior divisions) in the science projects with his project on "Terminal Ballistics." Those placing in the senior division in the history projects were first place, Veronica Triplet, with her project "A Bold Foreign Policy The Monroe Doctrine", second place Lisa Briggs, "The Logan Temple"; third place Jackie Wentz, "Quilts"; third place Michelle Steinaker, "Daggett County." In the junior division of the history projects the placing are as follows: first place, David Briggs "Linwood, The Town Baptized by Fire and Water" ; second place, Susan Dicker-son, Dicker-son, " Altamont-Bluebell" ; and third place, Zane Radosevich "The History of Clay Basin - 1927-84." She was accompanied from Ogden by her uncle un-cle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Eli Briggs. The Briggs visited with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Briggs and with Mrs. Eli Briggs's sister, Elsie Twitchell, while here. Mrs. Bryan (Jana) Tinker and her mother, Mrs. Norman (Joyce) Long, joined Julie Merkley, Diane McLean, Diane Bigelow, Sherry Bigelow and Janice Bigelow of Vernal in helping Mrs. Long's mother, Vonda Batty, of Vernal, celebrate her 78th birthday on Friday, Feb. 17. George Ellsworth, who has been hospitalized in Evanston for a week, was released on Saturday and is convalescing con-valescing at home in Manila. Glenn Ellsworth is also visiting with his parents. Relatives and friends from Manila attended the wedding reception of Tammi Jarvie and Dean LaMonte Hill in Vernal on Friday evening, Feb. 17. Family members and friends from Manila attending the funeral services of Mrs. Buel (Ida) Bennett in Vernal on Saturday, Feb. 18. Manila Ladies Volleyball Tournament Tourna-ment started in Manila. It is being held Feb. 20; 21, and 22. Kristee and Marshall Briggs, from BYU, attended the reception of their cousin Tammi Jarvie on Friday and the funeral of their aunt, Mrs. Ida Bennett, Ben-nett, Saturday. Manila received 8 inches of new snow with .23 inches of moisture later this week. Utility Bills Approximately $3.8 million in federal funding is' still available in Utah for assistance with residential utility bills according to Home Energy Assistance Target (HEAT) Program officials. The purpose of the HEAT program is to assist low-income households with the rising cost of home energy. Renters and homeowners may apply app-ly for a one-time payment during each program year. The current HEAT Program runs from November 1983 April 1984 and has served over 30,000 Utah households to date. Eligibility for HEAT payments is determined by household size and annual an-nual household income. The amount of benefit is based on the type of fuel used us-ed for heating and the location of the residence in the state. Applicants should bring Social Security cards and income verification for all household members age 18 and older as well as current utiltiy bills. Individuals interested in applying for the HEAT Program should contact their local Social Services office. For futher information, call 1-800-662-3633. The deadline for applications is April 30, 1984. Ant Raft To prevent getting separated during a flood, some ants on the North American prairie cling together, forming for-ming a big ball, says National Wildlife's Ringer Rick magazine. The ball becomes a floating raft that constantly con-stantly tumbles, giving each ant a turn to breathe. Amazingly, few ants drown. Bulletin boards depict Talents Unlimited program In connection with the Talents Unlimited (TU) program that is being used in several schools throughout the Uintah School District, Maeser Elementary is dedicating two of their bulletin boards for promotion of the major talents. In addition to academics, the UT program recognizes five major talents: productive produc-tive thinking, planning, decision making, mak-ing, communication and forecasting. The program began in September and will continue until the end of the school year. Each teacher is responsible respon-sible for approximately two bulletin boards throughout the year. The purpose of the bulletin boards is to express different aspects of the TU talents. TU is geared for students in kindergarten through third grade. The teachers have often used work produced produc-ed by the students in their displays. Displays are on the boards for approx- Booster Club meeting The organization meeting of the Uintah Uin-tah High School Booster Club will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the Uintah High School AVA room at 7 a.m. This is a booster club for all high school athletics programs, including boys and girls. All interested members of the community com-munity are invited to attend. imately two weeks. Currently, the bulletin boards feature the communications aspect of Talents Unlimited. One of the boards feature the different words used to describe a cupcake. The object of the lesson was to come up with the largest variety of words students could think of to describe a cupcake. The other bulletin board features a basic line drawing and what the students were able to make the drawing draw-ing into. The object of the exercise was to design an object that no other student stu-dent did. The Maeser school system has participated par-ticipated in the TU program for about three years and will be adding a pull-out pull-out program to develop the gifted student's stu-dent's talents. The pull-out program will include the third and fourth grades and will be taught by Donna Massey who is an instructor at the school. Snake Venom Snake venom is not only being used to aid people bit by snakes, it's becoming becom-ing a valuable substance to make new drugs, reports National Wildlife magazine. Viper venom, for instance, is being used to make anti-coagulents that can dissolve blood clots. It's even proving effective in treating coronary heart failures where a clot is blocking the arteries that supply blood.
