Vernal's 8th and 8th grade Panthers down Altamont 43-40 Uintah Ute forward Gary Swim erupted for 25 points in a game, Saturday Satur-day against Grand Junction in Colorado, Col-orado, but Swim's scoring outburst wasn't enough as the Utes were thumped by Grand Junction, 71 to 49. Uintah will compete in the Cougar Classic, Friday and Saturday and will host its alumni team, Dec. 21. Grand Junction snared a ten point lead of 24 to 14 in the first quarter behind eight points by Darin Watts, five points by Ted Parker, four counters by Phil Estenson, three by Darryl Dixon and two each by David Nissen and Bill Musgrave. Uintah was led in the first quarter by Swim's eight points on four field goals. Mark Powell, Kenny Rasmussen and Kurt Robb added two points each. Uintah scored eight points in the second se-cond quarter and Grand Junction scored 16 for a 40 to 22 advantage. Grand Junction pumped in 12 points in the third quarter for a 52-28 lead. Uintah Uin-tah scored six points. Grand Junction's top scorers in the second quarter were Watts and Parker at six points. Swim did all the scoring for the Utes in the second quarter as he pumped in eight points on three field goals and two free throws. Parker was the number one Grand Junction point producer at four points. Powell led the Utes in the third quarter with four points. The Utes turned on the point scoring juice in the fourth quarter as they poured in 21 points, but Grand Junction Junc-tion struck for 19 points to win the game by the score of 71 to 49. Swim blazed the basket with seven points. Jason Taylor scored four points on four free throws and Powell added two points. Rasmussen scored six points for the Utes. Grand Junction's top scorer was Parker at six points. The top scorer in Uintah's varsity game with Grand Junction was Swim at 25 points. He fired in 11 field goals and hit 3 out of 8 free throws. Rasmussen scored eight points on four field goals and Powell tossed in six points. Taylor fired in four points. Mulville and Robb added two points, each. Uintah fired in 20 field goals and hit 9 out of 15 free throws. Taylor was 4 for 4 from the foul line. Powell fired in three field goals and was 2 for 2 from the free throw lane. Grand Junction's top scorer was Parker at 21 points. He fired in ten field goals and hit 1 out of 2 free throws. Watts was the number two scorer at 20 points. He tossed in nine field goals and hit 2 out of 2 free throws. Estenson scored ten points. Grand Junction flipped in 30 field goals and hit 11 out of 15 free throws. Uintah's junior varsity team was defeated by Grand Junction, 77 to 59, Saturday, but beat Grand Junction Central, 59 to 52, December 6. Grand Junction owned a 22 to 12 lead after one quarter and had a six point lead of 36 to 30 at the end of the second quarter. Grand Junction grabbed a 58-45 lead in the third quarter and won the game by 18 points. Todd Mulville was Uintah's high point gainer at 18 points and David Gurr fired in 14 points. Joe LeBeau added eight points and Blake Horrocks pumped in seven points. Tony Lewis fired in six points and Derick Adams scored four points. Gilbert Davis added add-ed two points. Grand Junction's top scorer was Lindstrom at 18 points. Grand Junction Central grabbed a 12-10 lead in the first quarter, Dec. 6, but the Utes outscored Central, 25 to 7 in the second quarter for a 35 to 19 lead. The Utes owned a 47-40 lead after three quarters and won the game by seven points. Horrocks led the Utes with 19 points. He fired in nine field goals and hit 1 out of 2 free throws. Horrocks scored eight points in the second quarter and four in the third quarter. He added seven counters in the fourth quarter. Gurr was the Utes' number two scorer at 16 points. He fired in five field goals and hit 6 out of 8 free throws. Gurr scored eight points in the second quarter on two field goals and four free throws. He poured in six points in the first quarter and two in the third quarter. Mulville scored 15 points for the Uintah Uin-tah Utes. He fired in seven field goals and was 1 for 1 from the foul line. Mulville scored six points in the third quarter and five points in the second quarter. He added two points each in the first and fourth quarter. Also scoring scor-ing points for Uintah were Lewis, 4; LeBeau, 2; Adams, 2 and Davis, 1. Uintah's sophomore team was edged edg-ed by Grand Junction Central, 55 to 52. White led the Utes in scoring at 15 points and Mortenson poured in ten counters. Anderson and Lupko added six points and Mulville put in five points. Laing and Murphy tossed in four points. Vernal Junior High's 8th grade basketball team nipped Altamont, 43 to 40, Thursday in Vernal. The Panthers Pan-thers grabbed a 12-8 lead in the first quarter and fell behind 18 to 16 in the second quarter. Vernal gained a lead of 33 to 23 in the third quarter and won the game by the score of 43-40. Chance Murray was top scorer for Vernal at 1 1 points. I le put in five field goals and hit 1 out of 8 free throws. Also scoring for Vernal were LeBeau, 7', Oscarson, 6; Limb, 5; Mulville, 4; Wilier, 4; Laing, 2; Hacking, 2 and Jones, 2. Altamont's top scorer was Lamb at 15 points. He tossed in eight field goals and hit 1 out of 3 free throws. Thompson scored eight points and Rust put in six counters. Thacker scored four points. Fisher and Brotherson pumped in two points and Brinkerhoff added one point. Murray and Limb led the Panthers with three points in the first quarter and Laing. Oscarson and Wilier scored two points. Altamont's top point gainer was Lamb at five points. Vernal's Murray was the high Vernal Ver-nal scorer at six points on three field goals in the third quarter. Mulville scored four points and LeBeau fired in three points. Wilier and Hacking poured in two points. Altamont's Lamb and Thacker scored two points each. . - - The top scorer in the fourth quarter was Altamont's Lamb at eight points on four field goals. Rust scored four points and Thompson put in three counters. Thacker put in two points. Vernal was led in the final quarter with LeBcau's four points. Murray, Limb and Jones added two points. Vernal will host Duchesne in basketball basket-ball games, Wednesday.
