E. learning to read program will begin on Jan. 3 at the Vernal Christian School. Accelerated Ac-celerated Christian Education sponsors spon-sors this class for non-readers 5 and 6 years of age. Applicants are tested for such things as ability to differentiate shapes, to duplicate shapes and to follow stories and directions. The children who are accepted for the program will be in a half day intensive in-tensive phonics and mathematics program. pro-gram. Stories, songs, physical exercises, exer-cises, and games reinforce the learning learn-ing of sounds and letters. The workbooks follow, the oral exercises, ex-ercises, and before nine weeks are gone, the children should be reading stories; also signs, menus and anything else available, and adding and subtracting numbers. Mrs. Ramona Youmans of Roosevelt will be handling the program pro-gram this year. She will be trained in Clearfield, Utah, to handle Accelerated Ac-celerated Christian Education material and have training in using the A. B. C. program by workbooks at home. Applications for the program are now available and applicants should be tested before Dec. 21. Vernal Jr. High concert slated The Vernal Middle School 6th grade will be presenting a Christmas concert Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Vernal Ver-nal Jr. High auditorium. The concert will feature two outstanding musical groups both containing 6th grade musicians. Performing will be the band composed of 104 musicians. The band will perform such works as "Up On the House-Top," "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful," as well as other Christmas works. Also slated on the concert is the 6th grade chorus. Comprised of 296 singing sing-ing members, the chorus will perform such songs as "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer," "Silent Night" and others. There is no admission to the concert-so concert-so bring a friend to hear one of the largest performing groups in Vernal. THE CHOIRS from the Vernal Junior High and Middle Schools are preparing for their annual Christmas concert. The concert choir, beginning and show choirs will be performing along with the sixth and seventh grade chorus. Campus Capers Davis to hold open house By Tabatha Deans The annual Christmas Dance will be held December 23rd in the big gym at the high school. It is a casual stomp and cost is $1.50. The dance will begin at 7 p.m. and go until 11 p.m. Pictures will be available and Santa will be present. The winners of the window painting contest received their awards for a job well done. First place was Carl Slade. Second place was Carma Stevens, third place, Kenny Amaya and honorable mention, Chris Piner and Sherrie Smuin. A new committee has been formed and is called "The Student Improv-ment Improv-ment Committee." There are 4 students, 2 teachers, 2'vice principals, 3 parents and the principal. The committee meets to discuss the ups and downs of the school. At their last meeting the subjects were administration ad-ministration and respect. Said one committee member, "It's going very well. It's a chance for the students to contribute to the betterment of the school." This semester students that are taking tak-ing German will have the opportunity to learn more about it. They have been , assigned to do a German project. They can have guest speakers, make maps, mobiles, or whatever else they can come up with. This project really gets the students interested and gives them sthe chance to associate with other German-speaking people. FBLA had their Christmas party Thursay night. They played business On Thursday, Dec. 15, Davis Elementary will hold its Christmas open house following a PTA meeting and kindergarten program. The kindergarten will present their program pro-gram at 7 p.m. and the open house will follow at 7:30 p.m. for one hour. Members of the community and parents and friends of Davis Elementary Elemen-tary students are invited to walk through the halls and rooms and see the lovely Christmas decorations that each class has worked on. Choirs to perform concert The Vernal Junior High and Middle Schools present their annual Christmas concert Friday, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. in the junior high auditorium. Performing will be the concert choir, beginning choir and show choir from the junior high and the 7th grade boys and girls choruses form the Middle Mid-dle School. ; ? The members participated in a scavenger hunt where the clues were all written in shorthand. Winners of the games received a $5 bill or an advent calendar. They finished off the evening with a visit from Santa and refreshments. Since the Bye Bye Birdie musical, at least 11 new students have qualified for Thespians. Initiations for these students will be held Dec. 15 and be followed by the Thespians Christmas party. Last November 17 was the date of the 7th annual Great American Smokeout. The goal of1 the Smokeout is to get a smoker to give up cigarettes cigaret-tes from midnight on Nov. 16 to midnight mid-night the following night. For the third year, the Bureau of ' Health Promotion and Risk Reduction, Utah Department of Health sponsored a poster contest for grade school students throughout the state. "Smoking "Smok-ing is for the Birds," was the theme for the contest this year. According to Gary Edwards, program coordinator, , over 600 students participated in the contest. "We have had such a great response in past years," said Edwards, "that we had to limit the number of posters, " from each class. We had judges look at all the posters sent in and we awarded award-ed prizes to the winning students." : The other winners chosen throughout the state include: Sharon Caldcrwood of Adelaide School, Bountiful; Mary Jean Pratt of Boulton School.
