That time may have been invested in training, or in experience ex-perience on the job, or both. Why did you invest this time in your self-improvement? self-improvement? Why do you seek to earn as much as you can? Mostly , I would imagine, because you want to improve your standard of living, both for today and for the future. Isn't this the main reason? If so, when you receive a pay check shouldn't your first consideration be to improve your standard of living? What is the first thing you do with the money from your paycheck? If you are like most people the first thing you do is pay the mortgage or the rent. If nothing else, you want to have a roof over your head. Then you probably pro-bably pay the gas company, the payment pay-ment on the car, the furniture, the charge card or cards, and then the various charge accounts here and there. Finally, if there is any left, you probably leave it in your checking account ac-count until next payday. If this is the way you handle your paycheck, then you're doing it like most everyone else. Like 98 out of 100 you make sure that the landlord is making money and the utilitiy companies com-panies are in good shape, that the finance company on your car gets its interest, etc., etc. But what about yourself? Where have you made a payment pay-ment to you? You are working first, above all else, for your benefit, yet you sure wouldn't know it by what you do with your earnings. If you made a list of who you pay when, you won't even be on it. Or if you were, you'd be the last one. You'd get what was left. TO WIN THE MONEY GAME YOU MUST PAY YOURSELF FIRST. This is the most important step you can take to win the game. Your family should come to an agreement as to JOE'S ELECTRIC Do you have an outlet that doesn't work? Call Joelll (or repairs. Every month! Come or high water! It's normally considered feasible that you put away for yourself 10 percent per-cent of your gross earnings. Isn't that ridiculous? After working all month you get to keep only 10 percent. Just the same, if you can find a way to do that, you'll find you've made a giant step toward financial independence. You also made a giant step toward improving im-proving your standard of living because, before long, that monthly investment in-vestment will be worth a considerable sum. Some of which you can use to buy a new home, a summer cabin, a boat, etc. But you must understand that to win you must always pay yourself first. If you use some of the saved-up money later on fine. But continue, always, to put away that 10 percent. The easiest way to do this is through payroll deduction. Many do not have this option, however, or they have it but the money is not invested to their satisfaction. If this is your situation, then the next best solution is to make arrangements to have that 10 percent taken out of your checking account the day you receive your paycheck. That way you never see the money, and thus don't have the opportunity to pay somebody else before you pay yourself. And believe it or not, once you've started, you'll And you don't even miss the 10 percent. Where to put this money is the next concern. We'll be spending a lot of time talking about this. Let it suffice for now to remember that you must look at all the options available. Analyze them and then make a decision. deci-sion. Be sure and consider how long you're going to be investing, and what the expected return will be over this period. How does one option compare After a long court battle with Utah Power and Light Company waged by Moon lake Electric Association directors, direc-tors, investigation by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) resulted in a settlement order which requires UP&L to refund excessive ex-cessive wholesale power costs charged charg-ed to the Cooperative. Consumers that were on the Moon Lake system from July 1976 to October 1980 will receive refunds on their electric elec-tric bills totaling $3,711,797. This amount, including interest, was ruled by FERC that UP&L had charged Moon Lake in excess of the compliance with another. But more important than "how" is "what" you do and that is: PAY YOURSELF FIRST! P.S. There is a very fun book on this subject you may have read. It is "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George S. Clason. If you possibly can, read it. If you can't find the time but would like a 16-page condensation, pleasejsend a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Money Matters, Vernal Express, P.O. The rebate will appear on the electric bills that are mailed in early December. Prior to October 1980, Moon Lake purchased all its power requirement above that available from Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) from UP&L. On Oct. 24, 1980 after a ruling by the Public Service Commission Commis-sion of Utah that UP&L should no longer sell wholesale power, Deseret Generation and Transmission Cooperative replaced UP&L as the Cooperative's supplementary power supplier. Long before October 1980 Moon Lake's directors had made the determination deter-mination to intervene in UP&L wholesale rate hearings before FERC, said Steve Glaim, general manager of Moon Lake Electric Association. "The case has finally been settled and the board and management of Moon Lake are happy to be able to return the money to the member consumers con-sumers of Moon Lake," Glaim said.
