Show Union topples Emery Spcartcans Emery's Ryan Baker shocks High School's homecoming fans with a first quarter touchdown for a 6-0 lead, but the Cougars put a smile back on their loyal supporters' faces as they scored 27 points and beat the Spartans in Roosevelt, Friday, 27 to 6. The Cougars received the football on the kickoff , but they were unable to acquire ac-quire a first down and punted the ball away. Emery nabbed the ball on its own 35 yard line. The Spartans' Terry Thomas picked up a first down on a fourth down play at the 46 yard line and a pass reception placed Emery in Union territory at the 47 yard line. Baker advanced to the Union 41 yard line and a quarterback keeper by Thomas placed Emery on the 33 yard line. Jordan Hatch darted with the football to the 15 yard line for a first down and Baker upset the Union fans when he roared 15 yards down the right side and into the end zone for a touchdown with 6:25 to go in the first quarter. The Spartans failed on their bid for a two-point conversion. The Union Cougars' second set of downs wasn't much better than the first visit with the pigskin as they were unable to gain a first down due to short run, bad pitchout and an incomplete pass. Problems continued to bug the Cougars as the punt was a poor one and Emery took over the ball at Union's 31 yard line with 4:37 to go in the first quarter. Emery advanced the ball to Union's 26, but Union's defense became fierce as they sacked the quarterback and pushed Emery back to Union's 45. The Spartans were forced to punt the ball in the air. The ball was located on Union's 14 yard line, which seemed like a long, long ways away from touchdown heaven, but the scoring dream became a reality as Tony Winn received the ball on a handoff and blasted 86 yards down the left side of the field for a touchdown with 2:05 left in the first quarter. Mike Olsen connected on the extra point kick to deliver a 7-6 lead to the Union Cougars. Union's Richard Shelley advanced the ball to the Emery 41 yard line, but a holding penalty on the Cats placed the football on the Emery 45 yard line. Emery came close to intercepting a Cougar pass and the Union team gave the ball back to the Spartans on a punt. The Emery crew took over the ball at the 20 yard line as the ball rolled into the end zone on a punt by Chad Richard. Running plays advanced the ball to the Emery 28 yard line and now it was time for a punt. However, it turned out it wasn't time for a punt as Emery attempted a fake punt on a fourth down and failed. Union acquired control of the football foot-ball on the Emery 28 yard line and the fake punt failure became a big mistake for the Spartans as Winn took the ball 28 yards down the right side and into the end zone for a touchdown on the first play. Olsen connected on the extra point kick to make the score: Union, 14 and Emery. 6 with 9:39 to go in the second quarter. The Union team's Wayne Fillingim advanced the ball from the 37 to the Union 47 for a first down late in the second se-cond quarter, but a penalty pushed the Cougars buck to the 32. Todd I-urson grabbed a pass at the 39 yard line, but the Cougar team punted the ball away. The score after two quarters of action was: Union, 14 and Emery, 6. Union kicked off to Emery and a good return placed the ball on the Emery 43 yard line. Hatch of Emery roared down the field and to the Union for a first down, but the drive ended end-ed when Union's Winn recovered a fumble at the Union 29 yard line. Winn darted 9i2 yards to the 384 yard line and the Cougars were a few inches short on the first down. Fill-mgim Fill-mgim ripped up the middle for a first down at the 40 and Winn moved into Emery territory at the 45. Two more running plays by Winn placed Union on Emery's 36 yard line, but their offensive of-fensive attack died and a punt placed the ball on the Emery 12. Emery moved the ball to the 17 yard line, but the Emery quarterback was sacked and a punt gave the ball to the Cougars on its own 44. Winn turned on the running juice and dashed to the Emery 35 yard line. Fillingim carried the ball to the 27 yard line and a quarterback keeper by Richard placed plac-ed Union on the 12V2 yard line for a first down. Winn carried the ball to the 10V2 yard line and Larsen nabbed a pass in the end zone with 3:17 left to make the score: Union, 20 and Emery, 6. The extra point kick was no good. The Spartans fumbled the football and Union recovered it on the Emery 33 yard line. Fillingim pocketed a first down on the 45. A holding penalty placed plac-ed Union on the 25 yard line. The Cats punted the ball away. Emery was unable to move the football foot-ball and Union regained the pigskin. Union's Winn advanced the ball to the Emery 35, but a fumble pushed Union back to the 22. The Cats were dropped for a loss at the 16'2 yard line and Emery gained the ball on a punt. A first down run placed Emery on the 27 yard line and then Union's Scott Wilson intercepted a pass and darted from the 30 to the one yard line. Richard ripped up the middle on a quarterback sneak for a touchdown with 3:36 left in the game. Olsen connected con-nected on the extra point kick to make the final score, Union 27 and Emery, 6.
