By Hartt Wixom, Vernal Express Outdoors Writer The element of luck is not always placed on a pedestal when it comes to the hunting fraternity, but with sage grouse it should be. Same to a certain extent with the forest grouse species, blue, ruffed, and where open, sharp-tailed. sharp-tailed. With waterfowl, you can pin-point their habitat around water. Not so on upland chickens.'Sage grouse haunts can be narrowed down, but mostly only on-ly to sagebrush. Unfortunately, Utah and Idaho, not to mention all the West, has much of it. However, on a recent fruitless sage hen quest (admitting not all my outings are roaring successes) I did enjoy some things I hadn't noticed in such profusion before: the golden September harvest of alfalfa and grain which somehow seems more responded respond-ed when carrying a shotgun, and such things as sparrow hawks trying to thin out the early fall grasshopper population, popula-tion, plus the conclusion that despite unilateral agreements with Mexico, it is too darn bad we can't thin out the ubiquitous magpie. The sage grouse joust seems always too short, of course, for after you relocate them from where you scouted them in August, the hunt is over. But there are many other upland targets, including cottontails. The bunnies which I looked at recently were so happy hap-py sunning themselves on south-facing rock ledges that I didn't even shoot. Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-hunting. anti-hunting. It's just that they offered no real challenge. If I want to see if I can hit something with the 12-gauge, I can try doves (still a few around in warmer low elevations despite cold nights) or chuck a rock at the aforementioned cottontails. When one whirls into motion, that will be challenge supreme. How much to lead? About like the antelope. As for the forest grouse, many deer hunters merely take along the shotgun for diversity, since both blue and ruffed ruff-ed species pretty much live in the lower domain of the mule deer. In some areas, such as the south Book Cliffs, Price-Duchesne region etc. you might also find chukar partridges near big game. But if you want to enjoy a day of scattergunning, get out now to bask in the glory of Indian Summer, and concentrate on the birds. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is not predicting much of a forest grouse harvest in northern sectors sec-tors of the Beehive state, with a recent 100 hours of looking in prime habitat by experts turning up only 20 blue grouse, and slightly more ruffeds. The 1982 harvest, an all-time low, could be helped with the past wet year, with best chances expected in the eastern-sector's eastern-sector's Ashley and Uinta National Forests. Get up in the aspen and conifer con-ifer transition belt, zig-zag in elevation, eleva-tion, and of course, while you are at it, scout for the big buster bucks you'll seek Oct. 22. Stop occasionally to spook them out. Birds and buckskins. Don't just stroll around! Start now, too, to calculate the goose flights if you want to do more than merely mash the marshes hoping to stumble into a Thanksgiving dinner other than turkey. This year treat yourself and the family by coming up-with up-with a grand-fed honker. There are plenty of them moving the flyways in-early in-early October, and if the birds which haunted the swamps last week are gone, more can always move in. Canada's Ducks Unlimited authoritites report a fair year coming up. Studies prove what most of us suspect, that 90 percent of the honkers are taken by 10 percent of the shotgun-toters. shotgun-toters. Most are taken near grainfields or over decoys. If you are after mallard or pintails a large set of decoys can always do wonders. However, you also have a chance with ducks on all of the state river-reservoir river-reservoir systems by moving about inconspicuously. in-conspicuously. All waterfowl have excellent ex-cellent eyes and they're not color blind. So dress accordingly. Do the above, and your scattergun might get more of a workout this year.
