However, Mother Nature didn't cooperate and the tracks mostly remained closed due to lack of snow. This year, though, snow has been plentiful and Jeremy Ranch has its Nordic track fully open to the public. "Things are going great," Head Golf Pro Jake Hanley said. "We started Dec. 15. Snow conditions have been great and we're grooming daily. It's been fun." Plenty of Nordic stars have been hanging around the club, Hanley added, helping to kick off the first full Nordic season. "It's been fun to have Sunday Ski School lessons run by current and former Olympians," he said. "Billy Demong helped design our track and Taylor and Bryan Fletcher are around when they're not competing on the World Cup tour." To show off the new Nordic track, Jeremy Ranch will host a race this Saturday, Jan. 30. Hanley said all are invited to race, from beginners to experts and from juniors to masters. "Our track really offers something for all ability levels," he said. "There are several different distances and age groups." Junior racers will compete in 2.5-kilometer competitions. Adult novices will compete in 5K races and adults with racing experience will traverse 10 kilometers of Jeremy Ranch's track. The cost to participate is $5 for juniors and $15 for adults. Registration is open until noon on Jan. 29. capped at 125 competitors. To sign up, visit www.skireg.com/ the-shootout-at-jeremy-ranch. Races begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Hanley said the club is excited to become a player in the local Nordic race scene. "Todd Hageman, he kind of spurred it," Hanley said. "He's the race director. We're excited to host it here. This is the next chapter in being able to have a successful Nordic center and program." The Shoot Out name might be familiar to the club's golf enthusiasts, Hanley said. "We've paired it up with the name Shoot Out, which was the senior PGA event we hosted back in the '80s," he said. Moving forward, Hanley said the club hopes to host more events in the coming winters. "We're looking to be a part of the Wasatch Citizens Series in 2017," he said. "We're working with TUNA [The Utah Nordic Alliance] to try to find a day next year. That's something we'd look forward to." For this winter, though, Hanley said Jeremy Ranch is simply excited to have enough snow to showcase its Nordic offerings. "The word is just getting out and people are really excited we have a Nordic track again," he said. "Everyone's favorite spot has been the lower track along East Canyon. There are no distractions back there and it's very peaceful. You're just enjoying the track and the creek. "It's been a nice change of pace from some of the other tracks around. We're excited to see the growth. Hopefully the snow continues." And, Hanley added, guests might have some company on their trips around the track. "We have a herd of about 60 elk that are hanging out around the track," he said. "Elk aren't like moose, though - they're mellow. You can skate around. They're just doing their thing." Nordic team starts year fast Park City skiers earn 12 podium finishes in Idaho Submitted by Lisa Palmer-Leger The Park City Nordic Ski team competed in the first Junior National Qualifier at Bogus Basin in Boise, Idaho, Jan. 16 and 17. The two-day Nordic event brought over 200 athletes from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. Athletes were not only competing for the win, but for those U16 and older groups, a chance to qualify to compete at U.S Junior Nationals. The race in Bogus Basin was the first of three races that will select the athletes U16 and older to represent the Intermountain Division at the Junior National Championships March 6-13 in Cable, Wisconsin. Eighteen Park City Nordic Ski Club athletes competed over the weekend, bringing home twelve podiums and fourteen top-10 finishes. The races started off Saturday with an interval start classic race.
