Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, January 25-28, 2014 C-5 The Park Record Spring into creativity at the Kimball Art classes include glass, metalwork and printmaking By SCOTT IWASAKI The Park Record When spring arrives the world awakes from hibernation. The sun seems brighter. The snow melts and the days get longer. This is a great time for people to get their creative juices flowing with spring art classes at the Kimball Art Center, said Jocelyn Scudder. Scudder, the program and registration coordinator KAC, said registration is already underway. "We have all of our classes listed on our website in our education category," Scudder told The Park Record. "Our first class will be on Monday, Feb. 3, and then we'll get into the full swing of things until our last spring class on May 31." The Kimball Art Center website address is www.kimballartcenter.org. Classes will touch on different painting mediums such as acrylic, watercolor and oil. There will also be sculpture and pottery classes as well. New offerings this year include printmaking for kids and teens, taught by Scudder. "I'm a printmaker, who moved here from New York City and started working at the Kimball in September," she said. "I am teaching this class, which is pretty exciting for me, because I'm looking forward to getting back to it." The printmaking class is limited in size because the KAC only has one small press. "So, we're looking at this as an experimental class," Scudder explained. "It's starting slow, but we're going to do some monotype work and then we may get into some etchings with the teens." PHOTO COURTESY OF THE KIMBALL ART CENTER Tempera paints and rollers will be in use during the printmaking for kids class at the Kimball Art Center this spring. The spring classes will also feature an abundance of metal work. "Many of these will be taught by Jennifer Prochazka," Scudder said. "She will do two metalsmithing and jewelry classes, one for teens and the other for adults." In addition, Jim Hoffmeister will teach a small welding workshop in May. "Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of welding and design," Scudder explained. "Jim knows all about that and we'll have plasma cutters, grinders and shapers that the students will use. "We'll offer some longer welding classes during the summer, so this may be like a refresher course for those who have done some welding or it can be an introductory course for people who want to know if they'll like it," she said. Another material that is melted before it can be twisted into art is glass, and the KAC will also offer some glass-fusion courses with David Robinson. "David taught a class last semester and it was extremely successful, so we decided to start it up again," Scudder said. "We'll offer two courses. One will be another introduction course and the other will be for those who have done glass fusion before. We have a new glass kiln that we are looking forward to use." Then there's the use of melted wax that is mixed with pigment to create encaustic paintings. "In the past we have held one encaustic painting course with Jeff Juhlin," Scudder said. "This spring we'll offer intro classes and advanced classes. "Jeff is a very talented encaustic painter and printer from Salt Lake, who has taught here for years," she said. "The advanced class will allow students to divulge into the intricacies of encaustics and move a bit further from the basics." An encaustic class bundle will also be available at a discounted price. "This way people can dedicate their spring to encaustics and take the intro class and then take the advanced class," Scudder said. Knowing the importance of introducing art to the young, the staff at the Kimball Art Center makes sure every season to include art classes for tots, children and young adults. "As a community arts center, we want to make sure we reach out to all age groups. Not only do we offer classes for tots ages 3 to 5 and kids ages 5 to 10, teens and adults, we also offer classes to families," Scudder said. "These sessions allow parents to come and experience and experiment art with their children." One of those classes is Making Pottery Together with Kourtney Burgner Holiday. "This is a great way for us to get families into our center," Scudder said. Other family classes include wild art animals taught by Scudder, leprechaun traps in March and egg dyeing and an egg hunt in April with KAC education director Jenny Diersen. "We're moving forward and that's enabled us to get more people of every age group involved with art," Scudder said.
