OCR Text A-19 The Park Record Sat/Sun/MoiVTues, November 4-7, 2006 What is the W)mans Athenaeum? By Lynda Simmons This is a question that is often asked when people hear or see the name, Woman's Athenaeum Club. It is the oldest women's club in Park City and the second oldest women's club in Utah. The club is part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. (GFWC). This is the largest nonreligious women's organization in the world, The motto of GFWC is "Unity in Diversity."1 GFWC has six focus areas: Arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. The. word "Athenaeum" is derived from Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, and has come to mean "temple of learning." The Woman's Athenaeum, or Athenaeum as we often refer to it, has as its motto: llWe value our heritage, honor the people of Park City and serve our community." The Woman's Athenaeum Club was founded by miners' wives in 1897. The women wanted to educate themselves and serve their community. They met often and prepared papers to share with each other in their meetings. They used the six focus areas of GFWC to guide their selection of topics for their papers. They gave innumerable volunteer hours to make Park City a better place. They donated the first water fountain on Main Street, supported and improved the schools, founded and staffed the Park City Library for many years, sponsored community dances, planted trees in the community, sponsored writing contests in all of the local schools, provided seeds and instructions on planting and caring for gardens, sponsored the Flower Show on Labor Day, donated a piano for the Memorial Building and a multitude of other volunteer activities. Since 1942, the Athenaeum has hosted the annual Girl Graduate Tea (or celebration, as it is called now) for the senior girls of Park City High School and their mothers. This is a wonderful time for the girls and their mothers to be together and celebrate graduation and their daughters' accomplishments. The Outstanding Girl Graduate is honored that evening. The Athenaeum sponsors an Outstanding Sophomore student to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar each | Linda McReynolds LewisWolcott Bronch Broker • .SV//in£ Purl; Otf'i Finot Pro/if rti/J Sirxt 1384 PfiS 4 3 5 6 4 9 - 1 8 8 4 -Office 8 O O 6 4 l - l 8 8 4 - ' r o l l F r c * Dornbush R E A L E S T A T E www. l i n d a m c r e y n o l t l s . c o m Imcreynoldsf"1! w d p a r k c i t y . c o m ^1 THE BEST OF OLD TOWN! One or more of the students is chosen to represent Utah at the national conference. Both the Hugh O'Brien Student and the Outstanding Girl Graduate are chosen by the staff at Park City High School and honored by Athenaeum. The Woman's Athenaeum Club is a group of diverse women, young to not so young. Ella Sorenson is the oldest member and an absolute delight. Many young mothers are part of the group as well as many grandmothers. Members enjoy being together and becoming good friends as they serve. Each year, the Woman's Athenaeum Club chooses a different community improvement project. The members have chosen as their project for this year, prevention of domestic violence in our community. The clubwomen will support victims through helping the Peace House as well as educating themselves and others on how domestic abuse can be prevented. Athenaeum's next meeting is Monday, Nov. 6 on the third floor of the Miners Hospital at 7 p.m. Peace House director Jane Patton, or one of her staff, will speak about domestic abuse, its impact on the lives of not only the adults in a family, but also the children, and how we might help them. We are donating some of our costume jewelry to the women. They also need sweatshirts and pants for both the women and children. New underwear is also needed. These items will be collected at the meeting. The Woman's Athenaeum Club is always looking for new members who would like to help their community, educate themselves and enjoy new and old friends. Women are invited to join on Monday, Nov. 6, the next meeting.
