Show The Park Record A-8 Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, November 4-7, 2006 * The Park Record voters Guide • Summit County Commission, Seat A Editor's note: The following statements were submitted by the candidates in response to the following: Please differentiate yourself from your opponent Bob Richer Democrat Ineumtotnt There are two key differences between my opponent and myself. The first is my experience and the second is "walking the walk." Experience: I nave served Park City and Summit County for well over 20 years. I have a record of success and accomplishment in getting things done to improve government efficiency, to preserve our quality of life and to safe- Bob Richer guard our future. This experience and knowledge cannot be easily replaced This election, while a critical one for all residents, is especially important to maintain balanced representation for those residing in the Snyderville Basin. Walking the Walk: I have fulfilled the campaign promises I made four years ago. You elected me to hold the line on taxes, make development pay its own way, preserve open space, improve interaction with county staff and stand up to legal challenges. Good things dont just magically happen. It takes years of sustained effort to implement positive change. It^s easy to talk; its harder to do. As your county commissioner, I've worked hard,to improve the lives of all Summit County residents and have accomplished much. Bill Miles worked in many countries around the world. I have also worked for myself as a private consultant. While working in the health, safety and environmental areas, I worked closely with government agencies at the federal, state and local levels. I sat in the offices of congressmen and senators success' fully lobbying special causes; I testified before Congress; I served oh government committees; the governor of Nevada appointed me to the State Emergency Response Commission. I have dealt with and helped settle a number of significant lawsuits. I have been dealing with government agencies and working with them the way you -- the citizens -have to, not as a government employee. Kent Jones early in the development of the touch-screen equipment and programming and procedures have been put in place to address those concerns. The ability to upgrade and change programming when new issues arise will also prove invaluable. Having been the county clerk before is a benefit for me in that I already understand and know my responsibilities. Records maintenance, budget, voting boundaries, and commission minutes arc duties familiar to me, unknown to her. I have support of other elected officials and county employees making the day-to-day tasks of the office a team effort, not departments working on an individual basis. I'm excited about the opportunity to return arfcl thank all those supporting me. Bill Miles Republican Education, management experience and government experience are some of the big differences between my opponent, Bob Richer, and myself. After completing my B.S .degree from Utah State University I went on to earn a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. I worked in research and later became the director of research for a large agribusiness. In addition, I held senior management positions for several major corporations. In each of these positions I managed large budgets and large groups of employees. I have worked and lived in different areas of the United States and have Summit County Clerk Please differentiate yourself from your opponent Kathy Dopp Doftrt Gro#n Party I am a former ski instructor with a masters degree in mathematics who began Summit County's first Internet service provider. My son is an Air Force captain. Unlike my opponent, I am not a former county clerk who, while in office, saw no problem with unaudited elections and election reporting practices that hide evidence of vote miscounts. Formerly, one person did the programming to count Utah's punch cards without any independent manual audits of election count accuracy. I have devoted 2.5 years to election integrity issues and attended National Association of Secretaries of State and Association of Slate Election Directors conferences. As your county clerk, I would attend nationwide meetings of county clerks to advocate for reform and modernization of our elections, making them transparently, verifiably accurate. Utah's lieutenant governor, used taxpayer dollars to promote a private company's secretly counting our votes and decertified' trustworthy voting systems, forcing us to use flawed, expensive, hackable machines. However, we could utilize Diebold optical scan paper ballots, implement more openness, better ballot-handling procedures and sufficient independent audits. I do not trust Diubold to count my votes, so if you vote for me, please participate in our parallel citizen vote count at VoteNow2006.net. KathyDopp.com Kent Jones Democrat Kathy Dopp As of the date of this article, I have never met my opponent, so I know very little about her. I suspect there are two main differences, being her concern about the security and integrity of the new voting machines, and having no previous experience in local government I have met with and personally know most of the elected clerks throughout the state, and know of the training and testing that has gone into preparing this equipment for use. I am confident in their decision. There were concerns Summit County Sheriff Please differentiate yourself from your opponent. Davs Edmunds Republican, Inoumbtnt My career has been as diverse as it has been rewarding. Throughout my career, I have worked at every level of local law enforcement: state, county and municipality. I am a certified instructor in a variety of disciplines, including investigative interviewing, suspect interrogation, chemical agent deployment and civil disobedience. I helped plan the 2002 Olympic Winter Games as a Park City police officer. During the Dave Edmunds Olympics, I served as the Park City Mountain Resort law enforcement venue commander. I graduated from Weber State University cum laude with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. I am also a graduate of the FBI National Academy - a requirement for chief executives at many large law enforcement agencies. Since being elected, I was appointed to the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council by Governor Huntsman. Perhaps more importantly, I have been your sheriff for the past four years; I have done the job. Under my administration's leadership, the Summit County Sheriff's Office has developed into one of the premier law enforcement agencies in Utah. Brody Taylor Independent, Write-in I firmly believe the sheriff has lost touch with the people of the county. To police with arrogance and attitude does nothing but intimidate and separate. My roots in Summit County have taught me that all people deserve respect and compassion. We, as police officers, seem to come across people when their personal lives are exposed. I will have deputies who care about the people and their needs, more than a point system designed to motivate, reward and, in some cases, punish their efforts. As sheriff, I would determine Brody Taylor a successful call ending in a handshake and an understanding, and an arrest only when necessary. I have chosen to live, work and play in this county. My family will be raised here, hopefully for many generations to come. I aspire now to be your sheriff; however, I will always be your neighbor and a member of your community. Your Sheriff's Office, under my leadership, will again be a "serve and protect" department. I refuse to have the public attitude be a result of the abuse of authority and power by the sheriff and his administration. I am FROM SUMMIT COUNTY AND FOR SUMMIT COUNTY. Utah House of Representatives, District 53 Please differentiate from your opponents. yourself masters and government the servant. Please vote for the person who will best represent you, not a self-indulgent party. Vote Gary Shumway for State Representative. Gary Shumway Libertarian I am a citizen, not a politician, campaigning to be your representative in the Citizens' House. I'm running because I want less government, less taxes, and more communication between elected officials and ourselves. I have signed a no tax increase pledge, my opponents said they might vote to raise taxes. I'm opposed to in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and all other inducements which encourage breaking our immigration laws. My opponents disagree. I support choice in education and would encourage private and religious schools and home schooling. Education is too important to be left solely to government. I'm for health care reform by minimizing government intrusion, tax-exempt medical expenses, and eliminate lawsuit abuse. With three master's degrees, I have at least spent more For more information, visit www.voteforlaura.org. I'm asking for your vote on Nov. 7. Mel Brown Laura Bonham Democrat Gary Shumway on formal education than my opponents. Unlike my opponents, 1 have never been a lobbyist or received large contributions from special interests. I'm putting my own money on the line, not making up lines regarding large donations. My Web site is www.voleshunnvay.org. I want to once again make us the I'm different because I'm a woman and I'm a democrat (little d). Our democracy cannot meet the needs of its citizens if we dont have balanced representation in the Legislature, the peopled house. The current Legislature does not reflect the population of Utah nor docs it serve the interests of a majority of Utahns. The people have consistently called for additional funding for education, but they have been ignored by the Legislature. The citizens of Utah asked that we take care of the neediest among us give them dental work - and the Legislature voted for a new parking garage instead. The voters asked our surplus be spent on reducing class size, but we got a tax cut anyway. This past session, the Laura Bonham Legislature had a chance to open up the Public Employees Health Plan to small business in Utah, but this bill didn't even make it out of committee. Enough is enough. On Nov. 7, you can send a pragmatic woman to the Legislature who understands the needs of small business, agriculture and families. My background gives me the advantage over my opponents. I've lived or worked in Summit County most of my life. I understand the issues that are important to the people of this district. I've lived in urban and rural Utah. I know it takes an effective leader to address all concerns. I know what it takes to maintain the quality of lifestyle that we all enjoy. I understand the customs and cultures of the people in this district and the changes over the years that have made Summit County a desirable place to live. My opponent has criticized me for being part of the "good ole' boys club" but reality is the majority caucus in Utah sets the laws that we live by. Summit County needs a person who can be a voice and not an outsider looking in. There are a lot of good solid Democrats at the Mel Brown legislature, but they have very little, if any, ability to make decisions. From the day I arrive at Capitol Hill I will be part of the decisionmaking. Summit County and the people of District 53 need a strong voice that gives them proper representation. It would be an honor to serve. Utah House of Representatives, District 25 Please differentiate from your opponent yourself Christine Johnson Democrat I am a proud, unapologetic Democrat. Though I respect my opponent, we disagree on how to create progress in Utah's Legislature. He believes we need a moderate voice in the closed Republican caucus, and I disagree. The solution to excess Republican influence is not more Republicans, but more Democrats. If elected, I will be the most progressive voice in the Utah Legislature. I not only have the endorsement of Sally Elliott, and the Salt Lake Tribune, but I am the only candidate in the Christine Johnson state endorsed by the progressive national organization, EMILY's List. I believe Democratic values of fairness, balance and free agency are what Utah needs most. I have spent the past seven months working to understand the needs of District 25 and how its community members want to be represented. I am self-employed and can devote the time necessary to meet constituent expectations, qot only during the session, but all year long, I share Summit County's focus on education, health care and open space and will sponsor legislation that focuses on improving quality of life for all Utahns. I offer balance to the Legislature, as an openly-gay individual, as a woman and as a progressive, forward-thinking Democrat. Kenneth Graver First, I am a teacher who has worked in the most educationally, economically and culturally diverse high school in this state. I understand educational issues from many different perspectives and agendas. More of our state tax dollars are allocated to education than any other item in the budget. It is essential to have legislators who understand what it is like inside the classroom as well as familiarity with the funding formulae that flow monies to our children and their education. Second, I am a businessman who understands the need for fiscal responsibility. I understand property rights issues and transportation concerns. I also have a unique knowledge of health care dynamics and the current impacts the industry is having. I have worked to assist many lower-income citizens when they find themselves in crisis. I have a unique perspective, attitude and personal nature, which allow me to effectively work with all stakeholders to provide you, my neighbors, with key representation of issues that are important to us and our neighborhoods. Third, I understand my community and I have the ability to represent our many unique issues with tact, intelligence and work ethic. I get things done. I represent you and your values.
