Flint Decker of Prudential Utah Real Estate "As a child I became very aware of that and my natural curiosity led me to seek out the funkiest tilings I could find," he said. But Mali was careful to emphasize that his music was not simply world-beat or world music. Rather, he noted that it was rock l n' roll with a touch of world influence. Uis music backs him up there, offering;) mix that is above all funk and blues infused, but occasionally recalls such diverse artists as Tom Waits and California surf-rock. And Mali noted, as much as anything else, a connection to the jam-band genre, citing his interest in what artists like The Derek Trucks Band are doing. And when he and his band-mates are on stage, he said it's just time to play. "When I tour with my trio," Mali said, "its just us playing it slraightup, rocking out." "The whole New Orleans connection is underlying more in the rhythm of what we do," he concluded. Jimbo Hart and Robbie Kidd accompany Mali on bass and drums, respectively. And they all put in their time. "We're louring constantly," said Mali. "It's looking like we're going to hit 300 dates." The band, he said, is on a mission to bring its music to everyone it possibly can and making sure people have fun while they listen. "We take a lot of pride in that, that we can bring out a lot of people to our shows that love to party and love to dunce," said Mali. But he also said that the tunes should contain something for a New Orleans blues lover too, or a lover of Southern music. Significantly, the band's s l u m s at The Canyons and its show lalcr that night, at Suede will be the last two of Papa Mali's current road swing. That might inspire the band m e m bers to do something a little hi I funkier, a little more interesting, said Mali. He promised a nourishing experience from the band. "You see a funky drummer, deep, grooving bass and crazy slide," he said, " I t s kind of the musical equiv- alent to a big plate of soul food." Indeed, that exact item appears very prominently on the band's website pages. "Papa Mali, he's very good," said Barton. And Barton said he w a s excited about the whole concert series.
