BEN VAUOR, MAIN STREET MUSEUM VISITOR Like many front-line employees in the hospitality industry, Park City's visitor information specialists often field unusual questions and encounter peculiar circumstances. Ben Vallor, who works with guests in the Main Street Museum location, has several of these stories to share. "Just before the 2002 Winter Olympic Games a Dutch company named 'BEN* came to town looking for people named 'Ben' to help promote their communications company," Ben mused. "They were looking for humaninterest stories to connect with their marketing campaign during the Games, and I was one of the seven 'Bens' who helped with the promotion," Ben continued. Ben moved with his wife, Virginia, to Park City in 1988 after a long career with Kitchen Aid appliances. He retired having served for many years as the company's Vice President of Engineering, and Ben is one of those rare individuals who stayed a career course in engineering beginning with his college education at MIT and Northwestern University. Since retiring here, however, both Ben and Gini haven't really slowed their pace. Over the years, they have been involved with the Park City Library, Rotary Club, and the Park City Mountain Sports Club. As sports enthusiasts, both Ben and Gini enjoy plenty of tennis, golf and cross country skiing. "Virginia and I decided to retire in Park City because of the great climate, the mountains, the magnificent vistas, and especially for the active outdoor lifestyle here," Ben said. Back at the museum, Ben, the only male on staff, is the one who can be counted upon to be the "fix-it guy" or the "go-to guy" for a new way of organizing the thousands of brochures that are stored in the small museum facility. "I like to feel useful, and I like meeting ihe thousands of visitors who come to the museum," Ben said. "Several visitors have made return visits to the museum to thank us for the guidance provided," Ben concluded with a smile. The Main Street Museum and Visitor Center at 528 Main Street is staffed with six rotating information specialists/museum guides and is open during the fall Monday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. On Sunday the center is staffed with volunteer docents from noon to 6 p.m. The visitor center on 750 Kearns Boulevard is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from II a.m. to 4 p.m. and is staffed with seven rotating information specialists. Both centers offer guests a peek into the Park City past, provide current tourist information and collectively furnish guests with plenty of knowledge and experience about Park City.
