BASDEN Of the Record staff By all accounts, this year's Park City Kimball Arts Festival scored big. It appears as though expanded marketing efforts paid off with an estimated $30,000 gained over last year. In addition to a larger crowd, the Kimball was also able to sign up 500 new members, up 450 from last year, A reduced membership fee and the opportunity to win a luxury car was enough to entice those interested in supporting the Kimball. According to Pani Crowe-Weisbcrg, director of the Kimball An Center, "It was without a doubt the most successful Arts Festival in the history of the Kimball Art Center on all levels." Traffic appeared to move smoothly. although there were still questions about where a person could and could not park with certain permits. Foot traffic within the festival was another story. Maneuvering up and down Main Street seemed easier than ever. Everyone appears to be in agreement: This year's festival layout worked better than years past. A back-lo-back set-up with booths lining the center of Main Street allowed artists booths to be easily accessed while providing plenty of room for festival-goers to enter Main Street businesses. Paul Zelenka, Park City resident and owner of Unicorn Studio, makes and sells handmade tiles. Originally from the Czech Republic, for the past eight years Zelenka has had his own business. Because his work is so different from the majority of artists at the festival, he notices a S C O n SINE/flVWC RECORD difference in sales. "It seems to be people do Festival-goers observe unique mobiles at the 35th annual Park City Kimball Arts Festival held last weekend. Perfect weather made it easy for observers to browse the nearly 250 booths on Main Street. COURTESY OF SONY MUSIC Shawn Colvin will perform at Suede Sunday, Aug. 15. In conjunction with her performance, Colvin opens up about her battle with depression. By CASEY R. BASDEN Of the Record staff feelings of sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest in life - persistent emotions triggered for no apparent reason can all be symptoms of depression, a debilitating illness that often goes untreated. Some forms of depression are normal. According to Dr. Norman Sussman, M.F.A., M.I), and F.A.P.A, professor of psychiatry and chairman of the Grand Rounds Committee of the Department of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine, says, "There are many kinds of depression including normal depression. It wouldn't be appropriate if someone didn't get sad. Another form of normal depression is grief." But. for 46-year-old Shawn Colvin, a threetime Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, depression has been a crippling factor in her life since the age of 19. On Sunday, Aug. 15 Shawn Colvin will perform at Kimball Junctions Suede bringing with her a message of hope for those suffering from depression. As the sponsor of Beyond the Music: Shawn Colvin Speaks Out About Depression, a national education campaign sponsored by drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKJine, the songstress is opening up about her struggle with depression for the past 27 years. Her primary goal in this effort: to remind people that depression is treatable. For Colvin, her first episode of depression struck when she was still a teenager. The singer OPEN FOR YOUR DINING said in a telephone interview Friday, "I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep. It just came over me and it wouldn't go away." Her parents, recognizing something was wrong, took their daughter to a psychiatrist who prescribed medication. Although there were numerous side effects, the treatment worked. Once Colvin began to feel relief from her symptoms, she decided to quit taking the medication. In 1989, the depression returned "in a very clear form." In years previous, Colvin admits to abusing alcohol in an attempt to selfmedicate, but realized it was a destructive path. This time around was different. Colvin s first album, "Steady On," had just been released. She says, "The business of promoting it came to be and that is when the next episode hii." Additional medication was prescribed with the typical side effects that can be found when taking certain anti-depressants: sexual dysfunction and weight gain. Again, Colvin quit taking the medication and depression set in. The singer recalls her worse "breakdown" which occurred in 1995. According to Colvin, "I would try to exercise and I couldn't finish it. I would just cry. I would try to fix something on a door and it wouldn't work and I would fall apart and be completely despondent over it. Eventually I lost interest in everything. It seemed pointless to get out of bed, cat, talk to anyone. One day I couldn't get out of bed. It dawned on me that I could kilJ myself. I knew if 1 did that Please see Shawn Colvin, C-4 PLEASURE RIVERHORSE ON THE GREEN RIVERHORSE ON WAIN STREET Bring Someone Special to Dinner.,,0N US!!! Bring Someone Special to Dinner..,0N US!!!
