Show . h ! I f ft r r . - : I I Mountain man Steve Johnson visited Mueller Park Junior High and told students some stories about the Old West. The fringes on his jacket which most people think are for decoration, actually held rainwater from the buckskins and kept the mountain men dry whenever it rained. Old West visits MPJH A touch of the Old West came into the Utah history classes at Mueller Park Junior High recently. Steve Johnson shared his knowledge knowl-edge of a bygone era with the seventh sev-enth grade students. Dressed in athletic clothing, Johnson wore a wool blanket coat, coyote hat, buckskins and moccasins. Johnson demonstrated how mountain men prepared their guns for firing and how they made fires using flint and steel. He also showed show-ed students how beaver traps worked. Several interesting bits of information infor-mation were learned such as the fact that cougar was the favorite meat of the mountain men. Because the buckskins did not have pockets, mountain men had to carry "possible "possi-ble bags." These bags carried anything possible that the men thought important. A spokesperson for the school reported that the students enjoyed the visit by Johnson and many were ready to leave books behind and try their hand at becoming mountain men. |
