Show lobby Your Legislator' night slated for Tuesday BOUNTIFUL The Davis County League of Women Voters urges citizens to come "tell it to your legislator" Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Bountiful library auditorium. All Davis County legislators are invited in-vited to meet the public and exchange suggestions. Legislators will describe their hopes for the 1991 legislative session, and the public will be invited to respond. res-pond. "Too much legislation is passed because of paid lobbyists representing special interests says Nelda Bishop, League voter services chairman. "That is partly the fault of the public. Very few constituents con-stituents do their own lobbying for bills they are interested inter-ested in personally and even fewer lobby for bills that represent the interest of the general public. Becoming informed on the detailed contents of bills and their progress pro-gress through the system requires a tremendous amount of time. "Paid lobbyists and a few dedicated volunteers keep tabs on what is happening daily during the session but the general public has no way to do this. In addition, it is time consuming and requires sophistication to ngo to the capitol and know when a legislator might be available to talk,' she said. "Lobby Your Legislator Night is being sponsored by the League as a public service to give citizens an easy opportunity to become informed and to express their views. It is a unique opportunity to catch the Davis County legislators together at one time. "Town meetings held by individual legislators are traditionally very poorly attended in Davis County. At this meeting, citizens who don't want to say anything are welcome to come learn and show their elected officials offi-cials by their silent presence that they care about what is happening on The Hill," saidBishop. |
