Show Darts ease past win-less Lancers By ALAN HAAKE M KAYSVTLLE The Davis Darts started slow but came from behind to drop the Layton Lancers 74-53 Friday and hand rookie head coach Jay We lk his tenth season win. Layton took a powerful first quarter lead when Lancer Dave Hernandez dropped the first points on the board. The Lancers went on to lead throughout most of the first quarter. After a series of fouls by both teams, Davis Ryan Hovey finally put the Darts ahead with two free throws. In second quarter action both teams tossed the ball back and forth for a scoreless two and a half minutes. "You've got to hit those layups," commanded Welk during a brief time out Welk's council obviously ob-viously helped as the Darts broadened the lead to eight points by the middle of the quarter. The Darts also focused on defensive defen-sive maneuvers, forcing several loose balls. When the Lancers lacked lack-ed a third ball out of bounds, an onlooker commented, 'I know they're a tough team, but I think their (Layton) feet are working for our team." However, a reluctant Lancer team broke ahead 23-22 with only 1:16 left in the half. With less than a minute to go, a Layton foul brought Dart Dave Isaacson to the charity stripe. Two solid foul shots by Isaacson gave the lead back to the Darts, and some incredible shooting saw Davis run up the lead to 30-23 by the break. Layton forward Blaine Smith started the second half scoring, and the Lancers mounted another assault, coming within three points. Not to be out done, the Darts headed head-ed their own assault, and by the end of the third quarter had a 15 -point lead. "Defense you've got to keep up your defense. You can stop them, but can't let up. Don't let up!" Welk counseled during another an-other time out Lancer Wylee Strong caught the Darts off guard with a three-pointer, but only a short time later Davis shooter Ryan Halliday returned the charge with a picture perfect three-pointer three-pointer of his own. The Darts continued con-tinued their deadly shooting, stretching stret-ching the score to a 21 -point lead by the end of the game. Darts Dave Isaacson, Todd Heath, and Ryan Hovey lead the Davis team with 16, 14, and 13 points, respectively. Layton guard Wylee Strong led the Lancers with 13 points, while Blaine Smith and Jay J iron both added 9-points as other Lancer top scorers. Three point shooting also played an important part, as Davis had three players hitting the three-point buckets, and Layton matching with three players of their own doing the same. "They're a lot better team than the score tells," Welk said. "They're a young team...but they really got in there and messed up our game plan a lot," he added. Layton head coach Scott Ap-plegate Ap-plegate agreed. "We are a young team," Ap-plegate Ap-plegate said. "I keep telling our boys to hang in there. They play tough. I tell them if they keep it up, things are going to start rolling our way. But I give a lot of credit to Welk, and his team."
