Show Our Readers Write What goes around... comes around' Davis County Government is likened liken-ed to a Shakespeare Comedy, but, it is in reality a tragedy...a tragedy that could have been avoided if, prior to and during the 1986 elections, elec-tions, certain county Republican leaders and those of influence would not have been infected by a political non-Christlike virus. A virus that so clouded their minds that they did not recognize its symptoms of Type A Ego. vindic-tiveness, vindic-tiveness, revenge, and self righteous indignation. They chose to believe the accusers.. .and disallow the principles prin-ciples of fair play and opportunities of rebuttal for the belabored incumbents. in-cumbents. Ruby Price in one of her many statements in the press asked the question; "When will we have dedicated and honest people in county government?" Well I have news for you Ruby; you and others , helped put such men and women out of office and are now reaping the fruits of that labor. The late Commissioner Eberhart, bless his memory, predicted that, unless they change, Davis County Republicans, more than anyone, would be responsible, one way or the other, for turning control of the Courthouse over to the loyal-talented loyal-talented opposition party, and it looks like that prediction is right on track. During my six-year commissioner commis-sioner tenure there were times, to be sure, when within the courthouse family, for one reason or another, there was tension, strife or hurt feelings. feel-ings. But never did we forget that we were our brother's keeper and treated everyone and each other with respect and dignity and I'm not too proud or ashamed to add, "with Dear Editor: In Davis County "What goes around... comes around." During a Post 1986 Davis County Republican Party Election Victory Gathering a Mr. W.E., whom Party Chairperson Ruby Price called Mr. Davis County Republican, told a group he was mingling with quote: "Now that Commissioner Gerlach has been defeated he should go back to Germany where he belongs." I would like to report to him and those who agreed with him that I still live in Davis County, am alive and well and am concerned about County Government and the people I represented. That racist remark, by the way, was witnessed and heard by a disgusted Commissioner Saunders and State Auditor Tom Allen and which was and still is indicative of the direction Davis County politics have taken. Before continuing I wish to state that my wife and I are proud of our German heritage and parents who brought us into the world. True, their progenitors did not have the privilege of experiencing the hardships hard-ships of crossing the plains in covered wagons or handcarts but our parents did have to endure, in their homeland, a considerable amount of religious and personal persecution because they were baptized bap-tized in the LDS Church. But they persevered, remained faithful and excelled in all their undertakings. However, I am not proud of the fact thai Davis County has become the political laughing stock of the state of Utah. No one has to be told that county government is in turmoil. tur-moil. Of the three well meaning and hard working commissioners, we have had two of them cartooned as love. Therefore I, for one, wish to compliment Commissioners Peters and Stevenson for their recent reconcilatory attitude towards the auditor and her department. And may I suggest to the auditor that she put the past behind her, swallow her pride, meet the Commissioners half-way, hit the books, ask questions, ques-tions, become proficient and start contributing so she can enjoy her role. All I can say about Commissioner Commis-sioner Lawrence is that, in my opinion, opi-nion, he has been listening to the beat of the wrong drummer, and should come to the realization that he has been and is still being used and taken advantage of. So come on "Dub," go cold turkey, strike out on your own, get with it and start utilizing your talents tal-ents and "gifts" that God has given you. To Commissioner Stevenson I say, "Continue playing the role of the Statesman and leavening in county government. You are one in a million." Last, but not least, I wish to say to Commissioner Peters and those Republicans of influence that what has happened to him, them, and county government is in direct proportion pro-portion to the principle of: "What Goes Around, Comes Around." Harry B. Gerlach Past Davis County Commissioner tyrants and sinking in the ship of state, the third (looking, with the auditor, for past and present corruption corrup-tion that doesn't exist) as a saint andor spoiler. An auditor who may not have had her staff leave or walk out on her in disgust if she would have been applying herself to prove her worth instead of continually finding fault with others. A commissioner who one day in commission meeting when challenged by his constituents, incredibly told them to "put up or shut up," and because they did "put up," helped create an activity that sent shock waves throughout Davis County, lessened confidence in county government and which, in Commissioner Peters' own words, cost the county taxpayers tax-payers over $80,000 in legal fees. Also, appearing in the press have been countless untrue, inaccurate and misleading statements made by elected county officials that demeaned de-meaned both present and past administrations. ad-ministrations. It seems that the detractors, after all these months and in one case years, still have much to leam about how Davis County Government, its departments and fiscal requirements function. ..or...they are purposely attempting at-tempting to undermine the system for their own particular reasons. To many, the present drama of |
