Show Arrangements set for funeral , ' ' - 1 i f I j I iE r I t -'- ' r I John Stahle Jr., civic leader, publisher, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, age 86, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 1989 at Lakcview Hospital from causes incident in-cident to age. He was bom May 31, 1903 in Salt Lake City, to John Stahle Sr. and Cora Rebecca Stayner. Married Lydia Lucile Schulthics, SepL 24, 1924 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Stahle, a second generation newspaper man, was owner and publisher of Utah's oldest continuous con-tinuous weekly newspaper, the Davis County Clipper. The newspaper published its first issue in February 1891 and was owned by his father. Stahle grew up with the Clipper where he started running the press when he was 17-years-old. A pioneer in the industry, Stahle soon learned every aspect of the newspaper business. He succeeded his father as publisher in 1953 and remained in that position until the time of his death. In that capacity, Stahle led the publication through its strongest period of growth. He served as president of the Utah Press Association Associa-tion in 1968 and was awarded that organization's most prestigious honor in 1974, when he was named "Master Editor and Publisher." A strong supporter of the arts, Stahle introduced live theater and moving pictures to Bountiful. He owned and operated a movie theater on Bountiful's Main Street. An accomplished ac-complished musician, Stahle played a variety of instruments and at one time had his own band which performed per-formed throughout the community. This involvement continued throughout his life, and he played with the Golden Years' Senior Citizens Band until the time of his recent illness. Stahle is survived by children, J. Howard Stahle, Dean S. Stahle and R. Gail Stahle, of Bountiful; Merna S. Johnson, Roy; P. Larry Stahle, Farmingion; L. Nilcs Stahle, Woods Cross; 35 grandchildren, 89 greatgrandchildren great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by wife and daughter Lois Francinc. Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Bountiful First LDS Ward (Bountiful Tabernacle), Taber-nacle), 50 S. Main Street, Bountiful. A viewing will be held from 11:45 to 12:45 at the Bountiful First LDS Ward prior to the services. Burial will be at the Bountiful Cemetery, 2020 S. 200 W. There were many bright spots in the long, successful career of Stahle, but the peak of his glory came when he received the Master Editor and Publisher Award in 1974. w |
