Show Lady Vikes fall to Layton By DIRK FACER Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL Life among the region one elite was brief for the Lady Vikings of Viewmont After disposing of Clearfield last Friday, Viewmont was 1-0 in league play entering Tuesday's home clash with Layton. Enter the Lancer Express. Like its counterparts, Layton (2-0) also sported an unbeaten league mark. On paper, this game looked like a dandy. Unfortunately for the Lady Vikes, the same did not hold true on the court where Layton overpowered over-powered Viewmont 71-58. "Layton looked tough, said Lady Viking coach Lori Salvo. "I wish we would have seen them a little later in the season." The Lady Lancers were paced by 22 points from center Hilary King, 13 by reserve Shalei Valentine, 10 courtesy of Steph Cooper and four three-pointers from the Ferrin twins, Tara and Tricia. Viewmont was led by Nicole Bradley's 19, Amber Tippetts' 11 and 10 points apiece from Nikki Check ens and Angie Hansen. The Lady Vikings jumped out to a 10-7 lead midway through the first period following a basket by Tippetts with 3:25 to play in the quarter. However, Layton responded respond-ed with a 16-2 run before the buzzer Tuesday. Viewmont was held without a field goal for more than five minutes, scoring only on two foul shots by Hansen, during a span which ended with a three-point shot by Tippetts with 5:47 remaining in the second quarter. Layton capitalized on its strong bench, which outscored the Lady Vikes 29-2, and simply kept the hosts at a safe distance throughout the balance of the game. "We pretty much stayed with them in the first quarter, but then they had some people come off the bench and hit some three-pointers," said Salvo. "But our kids never died. They kept coming after them." The Lady Lancers led 38-28 at halftime and 56-40 after three periods. "We got up pretty good and we executed well on offense," said Layton coach Van Price. "I thought we did a heckuva job defensively in the third quarter. " Layton outscored Viewmont 18-12 18-12 in the period to ice the game. However, the Lancers' outside shooting also helped secure the victory. vic-tory. Layton sharpshooter Tara and Tricia Ferrin came off the bench and combined to hit four trifectas. Tara finished with nine points to lead the twins' efforts. "(Three-pointers) really help out. You make a few of those and soon you're up 12," said Price. "(Viewmont) packed it in a little bit, but then we hit our shots and that hurt them. ' ' The Lady Vikings return to action ac-tion Friday at Roy. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. LADY DARTS KAYSVILLE Davis, currently cur-rently 2-0 in region play, was idle Tuesday with a bye. The Lady Darts visit Clearfield Friday for a region one encounter at 4 p.m. |
