Show Abundant Life Assembly to hold tent revival I NORTH SALT LAKE -The Abundant Life Assembly of God church will be holding a nostalgic, old-time tent revival September 10- . 13. Reverend Alex Lucero explained, "No one knows for sure when or where tent revivals began, but they have been around for many, many i years. In the 1700' s, George 1 Whitefield preached in the colonial days. Ben Franklin said that he could preach so loud that 25,000 people could hear him. In 1800's in Cane Ridge, Kentucky, the first camp meeting was held. In 1890 in Oakland, California, Maria Wood-worth Wood-worth Etter had a tent that 8,000 people could sit in, but the tent wasn't big enough to hold the crowds." According to Lucero, "Tent ' revivals seem to be most common among Evangelical denominations such as Baptist, Methodist, and Assemblies of God. The attractions of a tent revival are many. It allows one to hold meetings inexpensively, to develop a core group of people that will start a new church. The preaching can be heard by people who just pass by who then might be drawn to listen and respond. There is an outdoor, relaxed atmosphere of believers together." Lucero feels, "The most exciting part of a tent revival is probably the music. In the early years of the Assemblies of God, tent revivals were common and the music was one of the strongest drawing features of the revival. The music is exciting, upbeat worship that exalts Jesus. Most people that have been involved in-volved in a tent revival say it was the music that attracted them first." |
