Show Can recycling is $1 billionlbusiness Reynolds Metals Company reported re-ported that it recycled more than 433 million pounds of consumer-generated consumer-generated aluminum during 1988 while passing the $1 billion mark in payments , to consumers over its 20-year history s the pioneer of consumer aluminum recycling. "The consumer-generated pounds comprise more than half of the total 858 million pounds of reclaimed re-claimed aluminum processed through our reclamation plants last year,' ' said Richard N. Boiling, vice president of the Reynolds Recycling Recy-cling and Reclamation Division. "The total effort of this division provides our company with more than one-fourth of its metal supply needs, and we are confident that this source of supply will continue to . grow, particularly in light of its energy saving and environmental advantages," Boiling said. The 433 million pounds of consumer-generated aluminum - for which recyclers received $173 million, mil-lion, came mostly from the network of Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Company (RARCO), a Reynolds ' subsidiary. The record total pounds recycled by RARCO last year in- eluded 9.3 billion used all- . aluminum beverage cans, or more than 100 percent of the cans Reynolds Reyn-olds produced. - In Utah, nearly, five million -pounds -of consumer-generated aluminum was recycled during 1988. Utahns were paid $1.9 million mil-lion for their recycling efforts. Reynolds operates 14 buying locations loca-tions in Utah from Ogden and Logan to theProvoOrem area. Besides used aluminum beverage ' cans, Reynolds also purchases other used aluminum items such as siding, sid-ing, gutters, storm door and window frames and lawn'fumiture tubing, . plus many household products such as aluminum foil, frozen food and ' dinner trays, and dip, pudding and . pie containers. Aluminum castings including pots and pans, lawn mower housings and barbecue grills also are purchased for recycling by Reynolds.
