Show Cancer Society offering bike treks Looking for a little adventure in your life? Look no further! The American Lung Association (ALA) is offering two longdistance long-distance bicycle treks featuring spectacular scenery, rewarding challenges and a lifetime of memories. If you want to savor the United States up close, take a good look at ALA's third annual TransAmerica Bicycle Trek. This trek is a 3,357-mile 3,357-mile cross-country journey from Seattle, Washington to Atlantic City, N.J., and is scheduled for June 5-July 21, 1989. The first informational in-formational meeting for persons interested in-terested in the third annual Trans-America Trans-America Bike Trek will be Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the REI, 1 122 Brickyard Road, Salt Lake City. If you would prefer to make the ocean your constant companion, then you might want to join the first annual Pacific Coast Bicycle Trek, Sept. 25-Oct. 21, 1989. The 26-day trek will take participants from Seattle to San Diego. To participate, the cyclists from all over the United States raise a minimum $5,000 in pledges to support sup-port the American Lung Association's Associa-tion's fight against lung disease. "The $5,000 that each Utah rider rid-er pledges will stay right here in the state to help fight lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, chronic chro-nic bronchitis and lung cancer," said Gay Saunders, executive director of the American Lung Association of Utah. More than 400 cyclists will participate parti-cipate in the TransAmerica, pedaling pedal-ing on a northern route crosscountry cross-country from Seattle in June with one ultimate goal reaching Atlantic City 47 days later. Billed as the largest "coast to coast fund raising event ever held in the United States," the TransAmerica Trans-America Bicycle Trek will take cyclists through the rugged Cascade Cas-cade Mountains to Spokane, CONTINUED ON PAGE 15 Cancer bicycle trek slated CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 Z across the panhandle of Idaho and into Montana and the beauty of Glacier National Park. The trek then travels through North Dakota, Dako-ta, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago Chica-go and across farm lands of Indiana and Ohio, into West Virginia, over the Appalachians in Pennsylvania to the famed Boardwalk in Atlantic City. The cross-country bicycle odys-sey odys-sey has raised more than $3 million since its inception in 1987. The third annual trek is expected to raise more than $2.5 million for the ALA's fight against crippling lung diseases. The Pacific Coast Bicycle trek will be a timely getaway for 200 cyclists who enjoy sunsets and the rhythm of the surf and who welcome wel-come the chance to explore the eautiful coastline. Participants "Sjll-ride through small seaside re sort towns, fishing villages, as well as big metropolitan cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. Between big city stops, cyclists will push their pedals through the scenic California coastal towns of . MendoCino, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo. Monterey, Carmel, Santa Barbara, San Clemente, Long Beach and dozens of others. "This very well could be one of the best rides offered in this country coun-try in terms of organization, scenery scen-ery and just plain fun," said Saunders. Saun-ders. "It's going to be that good."
