Show Freshmen on court This week marks the opening of basketball practice at the University, and it should be one of the most interesting seasons in a long time. This will be the first year freshman players will be eligible for varsity competition and the Utes, along with several other schools are going to take advantage of the new rule. Practices are being held from 3:00-5:40 p.m. every day in the Special Events Center. Currently there are six frosh prospects now listed with the varsity, several of whom are expected to see heavy action. Top prospects are Mike Sojourner, 6-8; Luther "Tickey" Burden, 6-2; Doug Terry, 6-3; Alex Bluth, 6-4; Charles Menatti, 6-7; and Weymouth Anderson, 6-5. Also included in the list of newcomers is 6-7 junior college transfer, Craig Nielsen. Veterans returning for this campaign include guards Eddie Trail and Tyrone Medley, and forwards Jim Sorensen, Scot Jones, and Charles Whiting. Two players up from last year's frosh team, Bernard Tomlin (who set a new frosh scoring record with a 30.1 point per game average) and Dean Porter will help. This season, because of the frosh rule, a junior varsity team will replace the freshman team. This will allow players to move up and down between bet-ween the varsity and J.V., and give every player a chance to play in one game or another. Coach Bill Foster is enthused about the new idea. "This will really help build confidence and experience in our players," he explained. |
