Show Staff grievances are subject to procedure The following is from the University of Utah Policy and Procedures manual and deals with staff problems and appeals. I. PURPOSE: To provide an effective and acceptable means for staff members to bring work-related work-related problems and complaints to the attention of management for resolution. II. POLICY: A. FACULTY PROTEST AND APPEAL PROCEDURE: Reference Policy and Procedures no. 9-5 (Faculty Regulations, Chapter V, Sections 1-2). B. STAFF APPEAL PROCEDURE: The following steps are to be followed by an aggrieved staff member: STEP I (1) Grievances are presented orally to the staff member's immediate supervisor. (2 ) To assure prompt attention, grievance should be submitted within five (5) working days of the event prompting the grievance. Filing of a grievance will not be grounds for intimidation in-timidation or dismissal. (3) The individual submits the grievance personally, but may choose a fellow staff member to appear with him. (4) The immediate supervisor should make every effort to resolve the grievance at the initial step. The grievance shall be written out, whether resolved or not, so there can be a permanent per-manent record, and signed by the supervisor and staff member, with a copy sent to the personnel services department. STEP II When a mutually satisfactory agreement cannot be reached between the staff member and his immediate supervisor, the grievance is to be referred to the next level of supervision within two (2) working days. A written decision should be given to the aggrieved staff member by the second level supervisor within three (3) working days, with a copy forwarded to the personnel services department. STEP III When a problem cannot be resolved as outlined above, the aggrieved staff member should personally review the case with the manager of employee relations in the personnel services department. This is to be done within five (5) working days of receipt of the second level supervisor's letter. A detailed, written decision should be submitted by the manager of employee relations stating the nature and history of the problem. When a decision is made, copies will be sent to the department and the employee. STEP IV The manager of employee relations will attempt to resolve the matter.' In the event the problem cannot be resolved to the staff member's satisfaction, the manager of employee relations will refer the case to the personnel per-sonnel relations committee. The individual may choose two university staff members to assist him in presenting his case to the committee. This must be done within seven (7) working days after reviewing the matte, with the manager of employe, relations. STEP V . An individual not accept the committee's decision 1 repetition re-petition for a hearing by thev president who directs tne tivities of the department which he is employed. Pe. must be submitted to the president within five 5 worU days after receipt of the mittee's decision. m ( president must reply aggrieved employee within -(7 ) working days. |
