The motion was approved unanimously. During the report, Administrative Ad-ministrative Vice President Ray Varley told the council that the AstroTurf, donated by Mr. Rice, is being put in beginning this week and work will be completed two weeks prior to the Oct. 7 game. He said remodeling of the rest rooms will also be completed. The building of dressing rooms, a new press box and new lighting suitable for color TV broadcasts at night will not be completed until after the football season, but will be ready to use for the 1973 season. Remodeling of the southwest ticket booths will also be completed before the UTEP game. Bud Jack, director of athletics, in a letter read to the council, suggested that the Oct. 7 game be played at night to show off the new lighting. However, Vice President Varley said the lighting could not possibly be put in by that date. Mr. Rice then spoke to the council saying he was enthusiastic en-thusiastic about the Umversity and has decided to help the athletic program because it "ties the University to the community." com-munity." He pointed out the superiority of the Sports and Special Events Center but he felt the football program was "not quite up to par." He said the AstroTurf will help the University's Department Depart-ment of Athletics to develop a "well-rounded program." President Alfred C. Emery told Mr. Rice he was welcome to sit on the bench with the team any time he wished. "In fact, you are welcome at any spot in tne stadium at any time." |
