Show Union shifts emphasis ' ) ' -! " v--. By TOM WILLIAMS Chronicle Staff Remember the good old days when the Union Bldg. housed a continous dance party? There was the Military Ball, the Junior Prom, the Spring Formal. Stomps were sock hops, tan slacks were chinos, and the guys in the know wore white dinner jackets and shoes to match. Today high school kids keep the Union stomps alive, but the rest is just a slice of yesterday's American Pie. "Most students would rather sit out on the lawn than in the Union Bldg.," said Phil Bernal, the new assistant director of the Unon Bldg. In an effort to reflect the changing moods of today's college student, the UB's format is likewise changing. "Most student groups still meet in the Union, but we feel we must serve them better," said Bernal. The buiding is quickly becoming the focal point for a wide range of student needs. Helpline, Participation '72 and a printing shop will be located directly di-rectly below the Student Activities Activi-ties Center. Room construction for these and other services should be completed by April, 1973. Bernul says the Browsing Room's purpose is beting taken over by various lounging and studying areas in the Marriott Library. Consequently, the room may be converted to furnish much-needed office space. The Cork Room will be remodeled to create a coffee house motif. Jazz and folk groups will be invited to appear on weekends throughout the school year. An improved ventilating system is planned for the room. In the future, Union administrators ad-ministrators would like to centrally locate many other student services, such as the Placement Center and the Foreign Student advising offices. of-fices. "Many students ask us if we couldn't bring these services under one roof so that they don't have to go up to the Annex and down to the Park Bldg. and back again for the counseling they need." Bernal said the Union office wants and needs feedback from students. "We try to facilitate the student needs and the only way we can get that is from student opinion." t it Ride discussed changes Phi, Berna., assistant director oft ; efforts to meet in students' interests and tne ui. them. |
