Show LETTERS TO IPSE EDITOR freedom of speech when it's assured that what we have to say will have no impact upon anyone. Whichever way the vote goes, why should we keep it a secret. Do we do such things for our own amusement or so that someone r will hear what we have to say? I find the idea of people, whether we be Birchers, Communists, or University students, conducting our own foreign policy rather intriguing. What would happen if we refused to let those Masters of War who control the White House make all our decisions for us, if we refused to turn over our tax dollars to be used to commit genocide, if our sons and brothers refused to get on the bus for Fort Ord, if we con- Save the school Editor: It has been brought to my attention at-tention that the Board of Education has plans to close East High. We have all heard of the fire which gutted the school, but the damage is not irrepairable. I personally feel that it would be a mistake to destroy (or even close) this, the second oldest school in the city (started 1912). Furthermore, they plan to discontinue flexible scheduling, the only major experimental learning system in the history of our VERY CONSERVATIVE lower educational system. This would be an even greater mistake, perpetuating the ancient (and poor) methods of teaching that this valley has known. I would ask all alumni of East, faculty of the University, or concerned students to attend the meeting Wednesday, May 24 at 8:00 p.m. in the Special Events Center or in some other way, make their feelings known to the Board of Education. John Pratt No secret Editor: In contrast to the feelings expressed ex-pressed by Thomas Bond (May 17th) critical of ASUU's proposed initiative to make the results of the recent student referendum on Nixon's actions known to Hanoi, I highly approve of such action. Why is it that we only have sumers refused to buy products from the corporations which profit pro-fit from this war? What would happen if we took responsibility for the contributions each of us makes to this war with our silence? si-lence? I'm tired of elected officials who are only responsive to the wishes of the ruling class. It's time lor student groups, minorities, women and citizen's groups to take back our power, to conduct our own foreign policy if necessary, and to make it a policy which reflects the interests of the working people of America and Southeast Asia. As long as we allow our rulers to use our money and our blood to carry out their military games, we can be assured they will press for "victory." Lana Magleby Z'on deception Editor: The Arab Student Organization would like to give the following comments on what Louis Zucker, an avowed Zionist professor 0 campus, wrote recently in Chronicle: 1. The Arabs in general and the Palestinians in particular cam be expected but to passionately intolerant or existence of Israel They ha, been dispossessed and chase of their properties three t.m less than 20 years by Israel created two million refugee of them. If the Arab sM present their "use to (continued onj ; LETTERS TO THE EDITOR y from page 2) University community, this ' oreatly upsets Zionists like Zucker omuch that they call it "hectic jnd unfair pressure." The ASO merely seeks to unveil the true jngressive expansionist face of ns the Zionist state of Israel which y to been deceiving the U.S. public since its creation. 8, IheZionist deception is not done J by arousing feelings against Arabs, as Zucker tries to defend v israel'but rather they show it as a ,j peace-loving nation, while the 9 historical facts prove that Israel is not. I Zucker's claim that the ASO ,. only seeks to convince others to condemn Israel is a mere falsehood that can easily be 1! disproved by the University e student community. 3. Arabs have always emphasized byword and by action that they are not anti-)ewish, but rather 1 that they are anti-Zionist. For esample, they are anti-Zucker because he is Zionist, but they are not against Rabbi Elmer Berger or Dr. Alfred Lilenthal, who themselves them-selves are Jews, but are not Zionist. Zionism to Arabs means dispossessing them of their lands :s and properties. This is why they are against it. i y 4. Zucker sets himself up as an lS arbitrary judge of what the students of the University should have in their activities. It is upt to thestudentbodyof this University to decide for themselves. 5. Finally, ASO would like to assure Zucker that it will continue to campaign for a better understanding un-derstanding between the American and the Arab cultures whether this arouses his resentment resent-ment or not. The Arab community com-munity here will always stand up to defend their cause and to lay bare the realities of the inhuman aggressive role that Israel is playing in the Middle East Whether this defense of their rights is viewed by Zucker as "false accusation" or whether Zucker's is, is left up to the American intellectuals to judge. Arab Students' Organization Bad pun Editor: I am not sure what Mr. Firmage, et. al., were talking about in their letter (618) but their ponderous use of words like "moral bankruptcy" "disingenuous" and "eo ipso" startles me into adding my name to their ranks. After all, anyone who describes a I "paradigmatic instance of a truly j moral position" in a sentence I running 73 words must be near N the truth. Only one other thing j puzzles me: what, besides a bad pun, is a "meta-position?" I R. Goldstein C |
