Show 4SUU decides to keep shuttle bus )s alternative transportation system latching funds from the Associated udents of the University of Utah (ASUU) id the University administration will iep the University Village shuttle bus in seration until June 1. The shuttle bus is irt of an experiment to look at ternatives to traditional transportation to impus. e ASUU Assembly passed a bill mrsday to give $1600 for the continued eration; $1400 is for financing of the. eration and $200 for publicity. The 'ministration is matching the $1400 and e University Village is giving $100. The sale of tickets will provide the additional $900 needed to continue until June. According to Mike Zuhl, member of Campus Affairs Board, the shuttle "hasn't gone as well as we'd hoped." But since the service was extended to stop at more places around the University, the average daily attendance has increased from 112 to 225. Approximately 350 riders per day are needed for the operation to pay for itself. Cathy Jordan, sponsor of the bill and a former intern under Campus Affairs Board, stressed the need for a publicity campaign to make the University aware that riding the bus is advantageous monetarily, as well as cutting down on parking hassles and pollution. Several amendments were made to the bill to decrease the money and to cut out the publicity campaign. But Paul Haglund warned, "If we don't pass this tonight, the bus stops tomorrow at 5:35." Mr. Haglund's warning had some effect, as the bill passed 49-0-5. The remainder of the assembly meeting was devoted to starting a new government. Committee assignments were made by the Governance Committee and short committee meetings were held after to establish some procedures. Norm Albiston, chairman of the Assembly, announced that committee meetings would be held every other week instead of. the regular assembly meetings. This move was intended to make the committees stronger and diminish the dominance the Cabinet has had previously. Surprisingly, the Assembly sent back to committee a simple fund transfer. The transfer was needed to make money available for spring compensation. Some objections were made to the Executive Cabinet Grants account receiving $3800, while the Assembly Grants accounts only got $1970. These figures were only estimates based on last year's compensation. No final decision has been made on who will get what compensation J , i |
