Show Rap session PPA: 'Every child a wanted child' By CLIFFORD L. WILLIAMS Chronicle Staff "The principal goal of our Planned Parenthood Family clinic is to provide counseling and make information available about birth control for all women ranging in ages 14-20," said Mrs. .Sarah Spaght, Program Director for Planned Parenthood in Salt Lake. In a rap session with various high school and college students, Mrs. Spaght said that the motto of the Planned Parenthood Association (PPA) is that "Every child should be a wanted child," "This can be done by preplanning and the use of birth control methods," said Mrs. Spaght. "The community of Salt Lake does not endorse family planning and thinks that PPA is or may be illegal," said Mrs. Spaght. "We are a perfectlly legal organization that simply provides counseling for young girls," she added. "We want people to understand that we are not a refural agency for information on abortions or any thing illegal in the state. If a women comes in and tells us she's pregnant, we only give her full counseling and various tests, then we may refer her to other agencies out of the state for further counseling," said Mrs. Spaght. "We make no suggestions whatsoever to a woman as to what to do with her child," she noted. "Girls are usually scared or embarrassed when they come into our offices because they probably they probably think we will call their homes or inform their parents," said Mrs. Spaght. "All of our services are completely confidential and private and are known only by the doctor and patient," she added "Besides if you're seen by someone else at the clinic that you know, you can ask, what are they doing here?" "PPA is doing the job which should be (aught in high schools and colleges," said Mrs. Spaght. Informative sex education is not taught in the schools, whereas a girl may find out about the facts of life on her own which may result in her dropping out or being suspended from school," noted Mrs. Spaght. "A school must reflect the community that it serves," noted one Brighton High student," but we aren't learning the things that we really should know because school officials, teachers and parents all shun the idea of informative sex education in schools," he added. "PPA has clinics operating in 6 areas of the state with various field offices in Ogden and Salt Lake. If any information is needed regarding counseling, information, volunteer work or any other medical aspects on birth control, people may phone W3-4471 for more information," |
