Show Disagree on Council funding ' Candidates split sports issue By TIM ST. CLAIR Chronicle Staff The athletic question seemed to be the issue that Duane Moss and Todd Hayes were most divided on in a debate on "As We See It; A Student Rap Session." However, neither candidate for studentbody president felt it was the major issue of the current campaign. The debate will be televised Tuesday night on KUED Channel 7. Of an annual budget allotment of $500,000 for students, $240,000 goes to the Department of Athletics. That works out to an average of $5 per student per quarter that goes to athletics. Mr. Moss said he would like to see that money stay in athletics. He called for expanded programs and more women's athletics. Speaking of the athletic question, Mr. Moss said, "We were hoping not to make an issue out of it." Mr. Hayes said the money that currently goes to athletics could be put to better use channeled to other areas. He also said the emphasis of the cutback should be the football team. "We must de- escalate football to where revenue can cover the ; cost," said Mr. Hayes. Football must be it i " escalated to a level we can afford, he said. i j Another major point of debate was the possitttj gf of a new cultural hall. Mr. Hayes proposed i l building with room for 5,000 people for cultural ; events at the University. He said he had received j support from the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, RDF and the Department of Music. , Mr. Moss disagreed. He said possibly new lightinj and partitions in the Special Events Center could til better be used to solve the problem. He felt ana av building was not needed. Both candidates were in favor of de-centrafejj student government at the University ad If strengthening the college councils. But they spi till on the amount of money they would give to it jj. college councils. Presently, of the $15 per studett per year for ASUU programs, $1 is given over to the newly-formed college councils. Mr. Hayes said he Shi would increase that to $2 and Mr. Moss said r would keep the amount the same. However, It , Moss said he would fund "good programs" W came up during the year from the councils |
