Show Engineers wdy for festive week are celebrating at the same time Prof. Roland Ure, chairman of the Faculty Comm,ttee said, "The activities e Planned for maximum student par t.cpation; we encourage as many students as possible to enter one or more of o activities during the week." The keynote address to open the week's program will be delivered by Dr. Perry L . Blackshear of the University of Minnesota' Dr. Blackshear chaired the American Association for the Advancement of Science Symposium in December 1971 ?nCLTu n "The Steady-State tarth. The address will be March 2 at 8 p.m. in the Social Work Auditorium. Each department in engineering will host a contest of student skills with prizes being awarded. Thursday, mechanical engineering will sponsor a catapult design competition, the most accurate catapult ' being the winner. The students competing will fire water balloons at a target and the winner will receive $40. In addition, a $10 prize will be awarded for the design judged most innovative from "an engineering standpoint." Civil engineering will sponsor a model bridge building contest Friday. Fntries must meet specific requirements, and there are prizes for the first four places, starting with a $40 first prize. Friday is also the deadline for the electrical engineering contest for the design of a magnetic cannon. The winner is the student with the cannon that can shoot the furthest. First place wins $25 and two tickets to the banquet at the end of the week. Computer science is hosting a contest entitled "A Fortran Subroutine to Play a Game of Strategy." The translation is a system for playing chess. There is a $40 first prize and prizes for the next three places. The mechanical engineering department is holding a car clinic in the north parking lot of Merrill tngineering w ith the objective of informing the public on what equipment is needed on a car to combat air pollution. Anyone can have their car analyzed from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. Other activities associated with Utah Lngineers Week are an open house of exhibits and tours during the lattei part of the week in the Merrill Lngineering Building I rom 2 to H p m. on Friday and from 12 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, such things as a laser beam exhibit, a display on a magical three-dimensional picture, the principles of artificial organs, map-making, and growing marshmallow will be on display in the labs throughout the holding. Open house tour maps and information will be available at all entrances during display hours. The week's activities will be culminated on Saturday with the appointment of the queen of l ngineers Week and a banquet in the Union Ballroom at (:.H1 p.m. Prof. Ure emphasized that the week's festivities were not restricted to engineering engineer-ing students. |
