BYU comes to town and if Utah is going to entertain any thoughts of a Western Athletic Conference title this season, or even a high finish, a win over the Cougars is a must. After the Foster kids performance Saturday night, the chances look good for the Utes; that is if they can put on a repeat performance Besides the basketball game Ute fans will get to be entertained by a show within a show. In other words Kresimir Cosic, BYU's answer to the Iron Curtain Comedy Hour. Cosic should put on quite a show Saturday night, because the Special Events Center is sold out and when there is a crowd the 'yumpin Yugoslavian is at his best. Unfortunately when he is doing his act, he is sometimes not helping his team. Of course, you can't deny the fact that big Kres is a good ball player and will give the Ute defense a stern test. However, if Cosic does his floor show the Utes may have an advantage and score a few MEMORY: Most fans can recall seeing a football player get hit hard enough in a game so he can't remember anything and has to be taken out of the game. This is commonly referred to as being "dinged." Two scientists from the University of California have moved their research out of the laboratory and onto the football field to study the effect on players who get "dinged." In a study published in "The Lancet" (Apr. 25, 1970) and reprinted in "The Sciences" (December, 1970), Drs. Philip Yarnell, Department of Neurology, and Steve Lynch, Department of Education at the Davis campus, talked to four players immediately after they had been hit. The players could remember that they had been hit and could recall the signal of the play that preceded the injury. However, after several minutes the players suffered complete amnesia for the things that happened before they got "dinged." The Drs. concluded that because the memory was intact 30 seconds after the injury that the information must have received short-term processing. The investigators concluded, however, that because the memory disappeared three to 20 minutes later, that memory was retained but not fixed. The scientists concluded that because the short-term memory was not consolidated in the long-term store, interference is permanent; and the blow and the events just |
